The 1969 European Touring Car Challenge commenced on a cold March day at Monza. First race was confined to 1-litre cars and, as expected, proved to be an Abarth benefit. With Arturo Merzario and Johann Abt retiring their works cars early on, and Johannes Ortner being delayed as his car was running too cold, the Dutch private entrant Ed Swart won easily by two laps, despite two pit stops to change plugs. There were a mere seven finishers. More excitement was promised in the over 1000 cc race for Divisions II and III cars. There were works cars from Alfa Romeo and BMW plus strong representation from BMW and Porsche private owners. Favourite Gijs van Lennep crashed his Porsche 911 on the first lap, allowing fellow Dutchman Toine Hezemans into the lead. Hezemans dominated the race until the three-hour mark when he blew up (broken con rod), letting an Alpina-entered BMW 2002 TI (Huber/ Neuhaus) into the lead from Quester's troublesome works 2002 TI which eventually dropped to sixth place overall with ignition troubles. Italian Guzzi’s Porsche took second place behind the Alpina BMW while third was the Division II winner, the Autodelta Alfa Romeo of Dini/"Riccardone". |
