In the race for Division 1, Rob Mason with the Mini was too quick in the corners for the Abarths of Swart and “Pam”. Another threat initially was the 1000 cc Escort of Hickman, but this fell back after a few pit stops with a flat battery. First it was thought that the Sunbeam Imp of Peter Harper was everyone’s favourite, but it went out with internal maladies. When “Pam” fell by the wayside (electrics), the finishing order became Mason, Swart and Hickman.

The favourite for Division 3 and overall honours had to start from the back; Hezemans had driven the SRT Porsche 911 on Saturday in Zandvoort as the support act for the Grand Prix. So Hezemans and van Lennep could not take part in practice, the organisers granted them each three laps before the race to settle in. The pair thanked by lapping under the pole-position time...

After the start, they were fourth after ten laps and closing in on the leaders, when disaster struck in the form of a broken valve rocker. It was repaired in a cool 22 laps, and they started all over again, in the end finishing 21 laps behind the winner Quester, finishing 12th in the end, second in class.
So what was the closest competition Quester in the 2002 TIK had? No Falcon, no Alpina 2002, no 911 - not even a Lotus Cortina or Escort TC. Even the other works BMW’s did not last the distance. No, it was the sensational Broadspeed Escort 1300 GT, driven by John Fitzpatrick and Trevor Taylor, who finished a mere 20 meters behind the Bavarian machine; in its defence, the BMW had to stop often at the pits - yet again twice with flat batteries...
