The gruelling 84 hour race round the Nürburgring had its decisive moment on Friday evening. The MG C of Vernaeve/Hedges/Fall was closing in on the leading Porsches when it came in for a scheduled stop. “Stop” was not the right word though, since the car overshot the pit and knocked down an official. Its brakes had worn out - and the car could not reverse; that would mean instant disqualification. The brake pads should have been changed much earlier; now the car had to complete one more lap without brakes. The callipers were damaged beyond repair, so they had to be replaced - meaning 17 laps penalty, according to the rules of the MdlR. Therefore, Porsche had a double victory. Of the finishers, 14 cars competed the race without penalty - so they did not have any pit stop of more than 59 seconds. |
