The seventh race of the cup brought us back to the place where it all began: the Nürburgring. BMW had dropped back from the fight (but it would return next year with a car more suited to racing) but the fight between Alfa Romeo and Porsche - albeit in different classes - was entertaining as usual. Four Alfa teams were up against seven Porsches, in the 1300 cc class there were two Lancia’s, two very fast Mini Coopers, a works Glas and a few Alfa Romeo Juniors. The 1000 cc class had a large number of Abarths as usual, the new NSU TTS was not quite competitive now.
Fastest of them all was Pon (9.54,7, including the new chicane just before the finish line) in a Porsche, of course, with de Adamich (Alfa) second fastest. All kinds of little spoilers were tried on the Porsches - at the front, or behind the rear wheels.
Race day was hot. Ben Pon took the lead, but soon a fight between him, de Adamich and Mitter took place. In lap 7, both Porsches came in in a stop. Mitter was away quickly, but the car left the road at Kallenhard and retired - a wheel had locked after a jump since the car was lower now because of the fuel load. Pon had the same troubles but kept going, at a reduced speed however. So Stommelen was the only competitive Porsche now, lying second behind de Adamich but in front of Bianchi, Neerpasch and Schultze. After the next series of pit stops in lap 12, the order was Galli, 24 seconds ahead of Rolland, Dau and Schüler.
After 23 laps, the Alfas were still at front with Stommelen fourth. But in lap 27, de Adamich came in with a blocked oil filter; now Bianchi took over, followed by Schultze and Stommelen; de Adamich rejoined in fourth place. Maglioli was seventh overall and won the 1300 cc class, the 1000 cc class went to Uberti/Pam with Kauhsen second - until the latter was disqualified for driving over four hours; he had changed cars since his first mount retired.
