Superior pit work and preparation won the 6-hour Pan American Endurance Race for the Brad Brooker/John McComb Ford Mustang.
Sept. 10. results of the day-night event, next to last in SCCA's Trans-American Sedan Championship, put Ford and Chrysler-Plymouth in a tie at 37 points each in the series' over-2 litre competition. This Smithfield Texas event, held at Green Valley Raceway, also saw Alfa Romeo clinch the under-2 litre manufacturer's honours with its fifth class victory in the six races run.

The winners covered 392 miles at 65.306 mph in a rain-drenched weekend before a sparse crowd. The field of 34 starters was the strongest yet in the Trans-American series.

The Charlie Rainville/Bob Johnson Barracuda took off from the pole position and led for 29 laps before pitting. The Mustang of Don Pike/John Timanus then led with the Brooker/McComb Mustang never worse than third. From lap 40 to 80 the two cars battled for the lead and the Rainville/Johnson entry came back to contention when Pike pitted. Rainville soon passed McComb into the lead and held it until lap 109 when he turned over the Barracuda to Johnson.

In under-2 litre, England's John Whitmore led in a Cortina until a 51st lap accident. The Alfa Romeo GTA of Horst Kwech/Gus Andrey took the class lead, and ran 3rd or 4th overall to the finish, winning its class.
With the Barracuda pit stop, the Brooker Mustang took the lead for 50 miles. Then a pit stop gave it back to Johnson and Pike roared past McComb into 2nd. Pike pitted to turn over to Timanus and repair time dropped the car to 9th. The Rainville/Johnson Barracuda started having brake and
throttle linkage troubles and Brooker pushed the Mustang in front for the final time in lap 198. He ran out the remaining 50 laps with a comfortable lead.
