At ten o’clock in the morning, a new era for touring car racing began; the first round of the European Touring Car Challenge at the Nürburgring, a place where touring car races like this one had been held for a few years now.

The race was started in four groups, each starting one minute after the other. Pre-race favourites Lindner and Nöcker (1962 winners) lost their compatriots Sparrow and Degner in the first lap: both retired with gearbox problems. Lindner took the lead nevertheless, followed by Böhringer and Waxenberger.
On the third lap, Böhringer was missing; he had hit a wall with his front wheel, damaging his tire - he had to change the wheel himself, costing over seven minutes.
Three laps later, Waxenberger came in with a broken fan belt, which took ten minutes to be replaced - a new one had to be found first. The Mercedes duo never could make up for the lost time, despite Böhringer setting a new lap record. Thus an easy victory for Lindner/Nöcker, despite the Jaguar’s loss of a complete front disc brake in the last lap...
