Siena, of course |

I decided that Perugia and Siena aren't so much hill towns as cities. After all the peace quiet we had enjoyed, Perugia and its Chocolate Festival came as rather a shock. So many people! We found peace and quiet even in Perugia at the Antiquities museum. One of the Etruscan burial urns seems to sport an angel riding a sea monster. Keep in mind that this was made some time before the 3rd century BC. While Siena is also a city, and was also pretty crowded--it IS Siena and lots of people want to visit--we still had a lovely time. We found a family run restaurant and had a great lunch, and were invited to dinner at the apartment of a friend of Bruce's, where we were treated splendidly by everyone. And so many things to see! Don't you love the Sienese penchant for banners? I do. And although the facade of the Duomo is being restored, and thus is invisible, its tower is uncloaked, and, perhaps to make up for the invisible facade, most of the pavement inside is uncovered. It is truly wonderful. |
