John Cotton was called "Uncle Brennigan" by my mother, Betty Cotton. He was a baker in Springfield, Illinois. They were my Godparents, and I can remember visiting their home on a number of occasions. I got to "help" make egg noodles in Rosie's kitchen on one occasion, a process that fascinated me. Bren kept a fifth of whiskey next to his chair in the living room, and sat there sipping it all day.
