Q: Will InformINIT ever be updated again?
A: Please see the Updates page for information about the discontinuation of InformINIT.
Q: I can't get the download to work correctly. What's the problem?
A: I have tested all of the download links and files; usually the problem rests in the user's web browser and how it is downloading files. If you have a problem with a download, please try another server. If you get a web browser window full of text, or a downloaded file that cannot be opened, click and hold on the download link for Server #1 until a menu pops up. Select "Download Link to Disk" (in Internet Explorer) or "Save this link as..." (in Netscape Navigator/Communicator). This will allow you to save the file to your hard drive. You can then open it with StuffIt Expander as you would any other downloaded file.
Q: Once I download InformINIT, what do I do with it?
A: Your web browser should automatically download and uncompress InformINIT. If it doesn't, and you're left with a file that has a name like "InformINIT.hqx" or "InformINIT.sit," you will need to uncompress the file manually. Find the application "StuffIt Expander" on your hard drive; drag the downloaded file onto the StuffIt Expander icon. This should uncompress the InformINIT folder or application. Once you have done this, simply double-click the InformINIT icon to launch it. (Note that if you have purchased InformINIT and are downloading the registered user version, you'll need to enter the registered user password when StuffIt Expander "unstuffs" the downloaded file.)
Q: I purchased InformINIT but was not notified of the release of a new version. Why is that?
A: If you purchased an earlier version of InformINIT, and did not receive an email notice from me, it could be because: 1) you may have registered recently, in which case your email address has not been entered into my database yet; 2) the address you previously provided was incorrectly spelled (it happens ALL the time) or is no longer working (perhaps you switched email providers?); or 3) I sent you email, but for some reason your email provider was having problems (this also happens all the time). If the answer is (1), rest assured that the next time I send out an announcement, you will receive it. If the answer is (2), please drop me a note to to let me know your correct/updated email address. If the answer is (3), there's not much I can do except hope that next time it goes through OK!
Q: What is the future of InformINIT now that Mac OS X is the "official" Mac OS?
A: Many people have asked me about the future of InformINIT now that Mac OS X has been released. I've actually had many, many requests for a Mac OS X version of InformINIT. Unfortunately, I'm too busy trying to get the "final" Mac OS 9 version of InformINIT out to even think about a Mac OS X version! However, one thing is for sure: many Mac users are not running Mac OS X (in fact, the vast majority), so InformINIT is still important. In addition, because Mac OS X includes the "Classic Environment"--a way to run Mac OS 9 inside of Mac OS X--InformINIT is even useful for OS X users. The next version of InformINIT will take advantage of this fact by providing chapters dedicated to the Classic Environment, based on articles and book chapters I've written. In fact, InformINIT promises to be the best guide available for the Classic Environment in Mac OS X, while remaining the same informative guide to Mac OS 9 and earlier it has always been.
