March is Ladies Month
Bunraku is boomimng
Here in good old Romania, March seems to be for the
Ladies, the first weekend in March was a "primavera day" where all the ladies
get flowers, single flowers, bunches etc, no matter whether you're married or
not the ladies are showered with flowers and little glass buables and shiny
things, lots of roadside stands selling all the goods, big deal here, an
appreciation of ladies day, pretty good I'd
say.then this weekend another one,
more like mothers day I think, we see people selling poplar trees and pine trees
( xmas) on the side of the road, not quite as nice as flowers and shiny things
but still a gift non the less, the ladies still get flowers too,
Things are really starting to move
along at the studio, we have 4 sets on three stages and a fourth stage firing up
Monday, another week
passes.................ziiippI
am very slack on the bLog lately, I knew it would get this way, not much free
time, when it comes, its nice to lay down and stare at the
ceiling.............ahhhhh.Sundays are
the Day off, and last week was the Birthday, which was odd to spend it here and
on my own, I did have a nice long video chat with the
L's.Today is Sunday again and i'm going for
a walk ,probably with MG, and we'll head west
maybe?here's some pictures from the
last trekthis escalator was not
working, there are a few like this, call Mr
Otis. Here
is the Bucurest Mall, not much to say about it really, small crowded, full of
people shopping, universal really. ( lots of Perfume on the ground
floor) Forget
the "subway "tiles , these are cool, Anne Sachs take
note LIPSCANI
neighbourhood....now then this place looks like WW2 but its cool, lots of little
bars and retuarants, its definitely the area where the "cool" kids hang out,
there's skateboard shops, and "leather"
wear, art shops, small galleries, a bar
called the "offside" which has football on all the time, its a warren of little
narrow streets and its coming back to life after much neglect as you can
see. THE
DACIA, the ONLY car you could have under the communists, there are two doors,
four doors, no doors, pick ups, trailers, horse drawn version, and many
discarded ones, now you can buy what you
want. cool
kids hang out in this arcade , I took a picture of this place a while back, but
now its warmer , people sit outside, this other building , is where they put
caucescue ( spelling) against the wall and shot
him cool
building thats
it for todaymore to come,, will have
stage pictures next week

of scenery not much time to build scenery or turn it around, anyway this is all
part of the deal. Its moving along finally,
money is lowing and we're in on two fronts and by the time I finish posting this
it will be four stages building.

Munchen and more, February 22nd -25th
ITS ALL SO NEAT AND
TIDY
I am a bit behind with the old blog lately, well yes
we are making a movie, that definitely takes some time out of our expeditions.
so I believe I last posted on Wednesday 20th, ok so here 's the next weeks worth
of business.Spotted the donkey again on
Thursday, he is part of the Transpo dept we think, ate in the local restaurant
off the studio, not the pizza joint but the "mititea" place, pronounced
mit-tit-tay, its a traditional sausage type thing with beef and pork , no doubt
fried in something and if you like, served with french fries, the sausage and
chips lunch.I will skip the rest of
the studio stuff as its slowwww going , at least it was then ( its not
now)Friday 22nd... yay, early flight (
7am) to Munich from Bucherest 1/1/2 hr flight got in to Munich at 8am ish, I
love time travel (when its useful), and Munich airport, being German and all, is
super efficient and organised and clean and everything is working lovely, out of
the airport on the S bahn, to the U bahn, and Bobs yer uncle, I am at the hotel
having breakfast with the 2 L's by 9am, fan bloody
tastic. So good to see them, they have
camp set up , neighbourhood is well canvassed and we are off to explore some
more, first stop pastries, cant go to far anywhere in Europe without pastries
and coffee. Jumped on the U bahn down to the
Marienplatz to see some giant Glockenschpiely tourist thing, impressive
building, lame glockenschpiely thing. wandered around a bit , Lily got the
biggest pretzel in the world, she ate it then wore it consumed a lot of it and
then I consumed it, then the rest , we
tossed.heres the glockenschpiely thing
and the giant pretzel. and some other
snaps We
did some other Schnitzel related things that day, and walked up the top of a
church to see that view in the picture above, we then headed back to our
neighbourhood to eat, it feels abit like the upper west side of NYC where we are
staying, a bit , not convinced yet but
similarNext Day, breakfast in the
hotel, great coffee machine, good food, yum, heading out to the Deutsches Museum
to see some old German things,WELL!!!
lots of great things in here, boats and planes and rockets ( V2) ( bad) my dad
told me about those, we'll skip that subject for now, great museum, Guttenburg
bible, first printing presses etc, I learnt that Rudolf Diesel invented the
diesel engine, I though the fuel came first, huh!! who knew?..... highly
recommend this museum, next off to the "auto" section of the museum, a bus ride
and a walk away.This place is a car (
and train) paradise, first production petrol car ( benz), amazing collection of
german firsts, international cars, the old NSU's trains, wacky bicycles, mopeds,
Fiats, buses just endless, almost too much
for one day, in fact it was , we were dead tired, we dragged ourselves back onto
the U bahn and back home and ate Sushi wooohoo and then passed
out.cue the museum
picturesmost of them are at the
auto/train museum, the Guttenburg bible is cool but it's in a drawer covered in
glass and ......well the Messeschmit is right there
....
theres
a ton more pictures, I will post them all to another site
soonOk, so Sunday, we go for a
stroll in the Englischer Gardens, big open park near our neighborhood, bit like
central park, now it feels even more like the upper west side in the
70's.anyway, usual joggers and such, and
bicycles did I mention bicycles?, everywhere, special lanes on the sidewalks,
special lanes on the crosswalks, don't get in their way ....its trouble, you
will get run down.Back to the park, lovely
day very sunny, we head over to the lake, we see these signs with Mother and
daughter walking side by side ( special lanes for mothers?) anyway L2 decides
that on these paths this is how you must walk, as things are very orderly and
organised here, this must be the
way. Funny
walks aside we head to the lake for some pedal boat action, and then into the
Beer garden.....yes, it seems that Sundays in the Beer gardn is very very
traditional, almost religious I would say, hundreds of people , getting giant
beers 1/2 chickens big sausages/ pretzels, pate, odd meat things, and giant
beers, I have to say I could go for some of this on a Sunday back in the US,
could be a thing....heres me an Lil at
the lake side beer
garden and
then we wandered over to the "chinese pagoda" beer
garden Packed,
gotta love those germans , ooompah bands and all at this one, great family fun,
and oh did I mention the giant Beers,
we like Munich,
Later Sunday, Lil and I headed off to some
distant pub to watch the Carling cup final, both being die hard chelsea fans, we
were ultimately disappointed in the 2-1 loss, and trudged our way back to the
hotel, Italian food for din and then,
sleeeepMonday, last day in Munchen for
me, I am back to Bucherest this evening at 9pm, so we wander about , buy an
english newspaper to get some news, saw this arc de triumph ( every city seems
to have
one) except
this one still has WW2 damage on the sides and
front more
of this type thing later.....in
Bucherestdid some shopping, and more
wandering about, back to the hotel packed up,
had to say a tough good buy to the 2 L's ,
very hard indeed, they will be back in a few weeks, to Bucherest next
time.down the U bahn to the S bahn,
check in at a machine at the airport foyer, straight to the passport control,
(no stamp) and to the gate , man thats efficient and so neat and tidy
too.( BTW Frankfurt airport is the complete
opposite)arrived in Bucherest at

Wed 20th February
What weekend was that? its Wednesday
already!
Well the end of last week flew by and then there was
the weekend, we are going to be workin' Saturdays very soon, however, we havn't
really started yet. There are some issues
which I am told are being dealt with and will be resolved very soon, so we can
make some steam and get out of port.....so to speak, so when that happens ,
Saturdays are ON.anyway Friday night
looked like this , at about 4pm, it got whiter outside, then by 6-0pm, it looked
like this outside the
window a
bit later when we were leaving it was like
this AND
THIS then It
took us 2 hrs top get back to Bucherest, it usually takes 45 mins, not so many
snow ploughs, ...say no moreand here
the day after, glorious sunshine and freeezing
cold Saturday,
I moved apartments, down the hall, moved into a slightly bigger space, much
better, esp for the next 5 months, I have a balcony I can jump off of, if need
be.I have a TV in the bedroom and the
living room, thats living, what's odd is that I get different channels in the
bedroom to the living room, ahh yes , thats
Bucurestichatted with the 2 L's,
getting exited to see them in Munich next
weekend.Sunday took a Subway ride and
a walk back across what we think was the east side of town, basically the Metro
is small, but reminds me of The TTC in Toronto, but with a more Eastern bloc
flair, ( Spaz will tell you that Toronto is the Eastern
Bloc)saw this lovely big tree in a
neighborhood, I am sure everything will look much nicer with Green leaves on
everything did
Adolf Loos build this ? I now realise the bigger pictures are much better, will
fix that in the next
post. and
finally here we are back in businessat Media
Pro with one of our sets marked out on stage with MG and Adi holding up some
poles, I think it might actually be
starting,these pictures were taken on
Tuesday, I'll get back to you on Friday with some
moreits Western Town by the way , in
case you couldn't
tell thats
about it,buna
seralearning Romanian daily and will
no doubt be bi-lingual by the end of the
showoh and we saw this last
night walking back from La papi restaurant.

Its Thursday already!!!!
zipping along
Can't hardly believe its Thursday already,
Valentines day, miss my girls back home, have been very busy all
week.Ate out at a restaurant last
night we had eaten in at the weekend, had the most surly waiter, obviously did
not like foreigners , ignored us for so long, then finally we got to ask for
menu's , he brought one only, ten minutes later, he comes back says "so what you
want", then after that is was not so bad , just slow, and of course
surly.Almost over the jet lag and into
some normal kind of sleep patterns, get to have an ichat on video most days at
5-30 pm Romania time, when the L's are getting up and eating breakfast, then
another at 6-45am Rom time when I am eating breakfast. its all about breakfast
on video.have taken to feeding the
dogs on the lot with bread from the commissary, however some are not interested
in it, it seems they are holding out for something better, the house cats got
real scraps today from the cleaning ladies, chicken bones and all, they loved
it.walking back from lunch we saw a
donkey strolling around the lot, just passing through I
guess. we
are going to start building sets very soon,........Monday ?, we
hopethats all I got for
now.ciao

First Saturday and Sunday
catch up, shop and explore
Saturday, Shopping,
Alex drove us out to the Giant Blue Swedish
Place where you get all your cheap bits and pieces for the apt that only has 3
of the basics in the cupboards. If there hadn't been so many overly dressed
women with shiny bits attached to their black clothes I could have been in the
Giant blue Swedish store in Oakland, its just the same down to the food in the
restaurant and the buns on the way out the
door.Electronics store next,
printer/copier purchase, success , moving
on.Grocery store, always fun in a
foreign market, funny names for products, colorful packaging, cheerios in a bag
etc, ordered meat from the deli counter, very
brave.back to the
apts.Took a walk down Calea
Victoriel,......insert text from tourist site........... Calea Victoriei is
Bucharest's oldest and arguably, most charming street. Built in 1692 to link the
Old Princely Court to Mogosoaia Palace, it was initially paved with oak beams.
The street became Calea Victoriei in 1878, after the Romanian War of
Independence victory. Between the two world wars, Calea Victoriei developed into
one of the most fashionable streets in the city.......end text....... you can
see the many layers of architecture in this city right on this street, from the
early to mid 1800's right up to the oppressive Ceausescu era apartment
buildings, so many beautiful old structures just wasting away. and others
restored and maintained as government or civic buildings, The Plaza where old
Ceausescu was shot is a popular spot, as is the giant oppressive Parliament
building which is not actually on this street, it is apparently the second
biggest building in the world next to the Pentagon ( square
footage).here's some of that
Architecture , the Central
Library
A Freedom Monument ( I
think) fading
beauty An
arcade inside the above
building This
too And
in an adjacent passage, this arcade straight out of Blade Runner, or
not And
the mighty Pile, The Parliament building, wow that is
big! Walked
around in a big circle and headed back to the apartments, COLD wind, freezing
face, I see why everyone wears a
hat,Spoke with L&L on the ichat
video, cool, grabbed a bite with MG, time
to catch up on the
sleep.SUNDAY 10th
FEBSlow start, very slow, managed
to catch up on the time zone, jet lag issues, read some, watched some Obama
newswent for another exploratory walk,
this time in a different
direction,check this out, sort of
spooky
looking!
A
fixer upper for
sale Let
sleeping dogs lie, they were all fast asleep, all tucked up
 and
a touch of the old cubism in a modern
world BRrr
freezing cold by the end of the walk, a few snow flurries and back to the apt to
watch the game,and heres L &L on
the video hook up watching the game
too! Sporting
the colors.and thats about it, caught
up and ret ta go for
Monday!!!!!ciao

Friday 8th Feb
A Quiet one
Well, today after waking up at 4-15 am ( I was
convinced I had the jet lag beaten) not so, I resigned myself to the fact that I
wasn't sleeping again and watched some Tv, Mostly Romanian talk show re runs and
BBC/CNN/SKY news cycles. Amy Winehouse was
refused a visa, shame, but she should get cleaned up before she goes on stage
again so as not to embarrass herself, she has an amazing voice and I love her
but she should calm it down a
little.No ALex the driver this
morning, new guy , very quiet, nice and polite, had the Romanian look, jet black
hair ,pony tail, black leather car coat, you know that
look.Met with our Project
supervisor/construction co-ordinator this morning, Magdalena she rocks, it was
like having your mum or your aunt talking about construction for an hour, I have
to say I can see that she
will
be the boss of the construction
teams.MG and I fired up and old FPD
tradition today, the beer lunch on a Friday, we had the driver take us off site
to the local pizzeria, Romana Pizzaria definitely the locals spot, full menu,
good beer and tasty food,see
look.
 I
believe we will know all the waitresses by first name by the end of the
show, they seemed amused by our accents and our attempts at Romanian, might be
the only place around here ( Buftea) that you can get a salad and giant
calzone!.Still having face plant
issues could have something to do with the above images and stella for lunch,
but I know its jet lag
really.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz,zzzzzzzzzzzz,zzzzzzzzzzz,zzzzzzzzzzTook
a ride in a golf cart today to look at some stages, brrrr chilly out
there,super duper tired, got to
go.

New Day
Thursday 7th Feb
Well a couple of notes from yesterdays report, It
turns out that the cute Lamb in the bag trick is employed by many panhandlers in
this part of the world, so while not uniquely Romanian it was however a first
for me, still very white and cute
though. And Ceausescu well yes he does
have a lot to answer for, I did however realize he was put up against a wall and
shot and killed, so thats
something.Today we got a coffee
machine, we did ask for one and I expected to get a good old Black and decker
drip number, but low and behold we got this bad boy,
whilst
walking back from the commissary today after some fine cuisine, polenta and some
cabbage/beef sort of baked thingy, which was actually pretty tasty,
I noticed that here at the studio,
trumpets are banned .so there, take
that Wynton Marselis
I
asked one of the locals, what's up with the trumpet rules,
he
had no answer, just gave me this
look.had my usual 5-15pm chat with
L&L who were just waking up, both MG and I were having trouble not doing
face plants on the desks today at around 6-30pm, the jet lag is just wicked
sometimes.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Really....its 3-30am?
Wednesday
Yup , knew it, 3-30am wide awake, happened last
time, oh well, at least I have CNN- Wolf Blitzer and "the best political team on
television" to keep me company, Its still Super Tuesday in the US and well its
sort of interesting for ten minutes when all you want to do is
sleep....................three attempts to return to the land of nod, no success
back to Wolf and yes Obama has Delaware and Idaho, how did he win
Idaho?what's funny is both Sky and the BBC
have their own Super Tuesday shows with Pundits who sort of know what they are
talking about but not really, they of course wish they had "the best Political
team on television" . I can only assume that in Wolf's contract its states he
has to repeat that phrase every 5.5 minutes.
Enough. Two more chapters of Cindy's book,
Girls 101 and the alphabet, very interesting. now its 6-30 am, ok time to get
going.Meet MG ( art director) for
some brekky in the hotels buffet dealio bistro,
pretty good, almost the full english,
Romanian
style. 7-45am
overcast grey and cold outside the Centreville ( mini apartments) apartments
built for small people, enough said.driver
is late.....Traffic no doubt, I call to ask where he might be, he shows up,it
was traffic,8-15am, hit the rush hour
traffic, not too bad, Raging Romanian disco on the radio....big euro
beat.....Ceausescu
images.jpeghas
a lot to answer for he pretty much destroyed this place, giant ugly concrete
apartment buildings blocks long
and
the general raping of the country, remaking it in his own vision ( whatever that
was) It seems the Russians helped a lot
too. this
place ( below) is some kind of factory industrial facility , which makes or
produces.............? Speaking
of the Russians they built Media Pro studios, to make Happy Russian movies in
the 50's and now we are here to make our
movie.Paramount Pictures its not,
It
looks a bit like it ....? maybe.......well at least its
white.Everything here has a "patina" ,
except stage 8b, which is brand new and super duper nice, and stage 12b will be
like that too ( when they finish it) hope they finish soon as we need
it.we took an office today, and got
internet, and coffee, and a phone, whoo hoo and it works
too. walked
around a bit checked a few things out, just like the airport there are lots of
men in big coats and funny hats standing around, these men however are not
looking for taxi work , they seem to be watching other men work, its the norm as
far as I can tell, three guys working and four watching, I think its shift work,
that way they all get to play.Lunch
time, Smoke filled cafeteria, odd looking sample dishes, not ready for that
stuff yet, need to get my immune system up
first, stick with the sandwich and "chicken"
flavour chips much safer......oh and of course the 2 litre bottle of
Orangina,....because when in
Romania......... back
to the office, actual work taking place
today...........schedules..........schedules and more schedules, and some
insights into the inner workings of the studio,
for instance, Alex our driver, who as you
might remember was late this morning, traffic, he is the subject of an "incident
file" a nasty looking sheet of paper with all sorts of boxes with check marks
and times and dates and potential torture measures written in Romanian.
I was asked to sign it !! , I balked of
course and wanted to know what was going to happen to him if I did, the
presenter of the paper said it was policy and that they had had some trouble
with drivers lately, Alex has been nothing but punctual every time except this
morning ( traffic). I was told I had to sign it and I asked if it was the call
that I made this morning looking for him that had prompted this "incident file"
and yes he said thats why, but I had to sign it and he was adamant, so I did and
immediately got on the phone to the "boss" who said that he was not going to be
in trouble, or tortured or persecuted in any way,
Michael thinks as we have not seen him since
this morning and he is tied up in the basement with cigarette burns on his
arms.Lets hope hope shows up to take us back
to town. There are lots of stray dogs
in Romania, Bucuresti has many, the out lying areas have lots, they all seem to
be well fed, and just get along ok, they are of course a bit dirty, and have
their own territory, they don't harass you if you dont harass them, at the
studio there are many, I think by the time we are finished we will have one of
our own as we are dog lovers and they will figure that out and this building
will be popular, we also have a house cat, who is a bit shy right now but will
come around I am
sure. and
the final animal note of the day, last night when walking back from dinner, MG
and I were hit up by the customary street "panhandlers" , an only in Romania
moment happened when a young girl carrying a lamb in a bag ( large purse size
bag) asked for money, well the lamb was white as snow and very real and cute
too, I am not sure if her name was Mary but she was persistent, but as I said
before we were told not to talk to strangers or give them money, I was
tempted.......still no Alex, MG is
going to the basement to look for
him7-45pmAlex
arrives to pick us up, no scars or burns, turns out Alex was outside the hotel
bistro at 7-45 am, but parked across the street.......Not Traffic at
all.power nap in car, hit the market,
supplies, good to go, back to
smallville.

Bunraku hits Bucuresti
Getting There
Feb
4thSan Francisco-to
ChicagoMonday
am.Ouch.....4-45 am pick up to go to SFO, I
opted for the Black sedan service, the regular Marin airport shuttle is a tad
unreliable and all the cabs in Marin well they smell like Toronto cabs in the
winter, go there and smell for yourself, its not good. So comfort and
reliability this morning just the smell of German leather and 740 am news all
the way to SFO.Apparently you can only
check in or fly to Romania with an itinerary that does not exceed 90 days,
anything over 90 days you need a visa, so changed the return leg and hit the
security line, ahh....TSA, well what's to say, not the sharpest tool in the
shed, looks good, so I guess it serves some
purpose.coffee,yoghurt,coffee.7-45am,
take off, guy next to me says nothing all flight, I said nothing to him, so that
was that.
landing,
snowy Chi-town-1-30pmChicago
to Frankfurt2-30pm, triple 7 , not
a full flight, empty seat next to me, luvly, more room to stash the newspapers,
books, headphones why so much stuff ?. take
off, drinks trolley first pass,...movie selections Michael Clayton, sure why
not, Gone baby gone, sure, Bee Movie, yeah ok, Elizabeth, cant beat a Bessie
movie, that should pass some time. Technical
difficulties.........movies are not working........Oh well there goes that
entertainment opportunity.Not a
problem as I have Miss Cindy Guidry's new book, "The last single woman in
America", Cindy's an old friend from (her) days in San Francisco. Read about
120 pages , hard to put down, just hilarious and I want more, will finish it
later today....possibly.meal, drinks trolley
round 2 and 3, nap, , four hours left, read, work for an hour, nap, freshen up,
breakfast,
coffee landedFrankfurt-5-30am
Tuesdaycall home, very happy 10 year old
on the phone, caught her just before bed, spandex 23, bubble butt (
code)Arrivals lounge, nap maybe?, not slept
very much, its about 9pm SF time so I can go a bit longer with out
it. 8-20
am still in the arrivals lounge, two bread rolls one coffee and a sparkling
water, lots of headset wearing business
types, chit chatting, tried to sleep didn't work, how come other people are
doing it, slumped over in their chairs I am gonna try again,
still not working for me.....they seem to be able to do it........I'll sleep on
the plane.Frankfurt to
Bucharest10-30am10-50am,
delayed, in the waiting area, Obama and Clinton getting lots of TV time in
Deutschland get on the bus out to the
tarmac, wait on the bus, for all the Germanness going on its not very efficient
here at Frankunfurter
airport. finally
on board, window seat , exit row no seat in front of me, full leg extension (
best seat on the plane), minor problem, gentleman one seat to my left has odour
issues, .....................now about that sleep.
maybe 45 mins nap........move clock
another hour forward.sandwich and beir, from
very strict German lady in a Lufthansa
uniform. Tuesday
2-20 pmlanded....in
ROMANIA!!!! Ahh
yes, Buchuresti airport .............Passport control, they could be less
interested, on to baggage claim, last time I was here the roll of Plans (
drawings) that I had to check got lost somewhere, left behind along the way
(Munich)This time so as not to disappoint ,
it happens again, I get all my bags but not the plans.
fantastic.Alex the driver meets me in
the arrivals area, nice kid (he drove me back in Dec)
we got swarmed ( 3) by " luggage helpers"
once outside the terminal, its really quite the scene outside the airport, lots
of portly men in coats and funny hats angling for taxi work, gypsy's (I am
guessing) doing the "luggage help" thing, basically touching your bags ( bags on
luggage cart) on the way to the car not actually lifting or helping, kind of
like in Life of Brian where Michael Palin is skipping down the road asking for a
