Background: Greenhouse gases like water vapor, carbon dioxide, and ozone trap infrared radiation (a form of energy) from the Sun and warm the Earth. These gases are needed to keep the Earth warm enough for us to live here. For thousands of years the Earth's climate and the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have remained the same.

Problem:
In the last 50 years, humans have consumed large amounts of natural resources and energy. These actions have greatly increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Scientists believe the Earth's climate has been getting warmer because of these human actions. Symptoms of the Earth's changing climate include melting glaciers.

Solution:
Humans need to use natural resources and energy wisely to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases added to the atmoshpere. Here are somethings you can do to help.

  • Educate others about global warming.
  • Save energy by turning off lights and other electronics when you are not using them.
  • Save natural resources like trees by recycling. (Trees absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas.)
  • Buy electronic devices with the ENERGY STAR label. They are designed to use less energy.
  • Replace incandescent lamps with flourescent lamps. (They use less energy.)
