Guatemalan
government is supposed to offer free medical attention to everyone
through the National Health Program, unfortunately the budget does
not cover all the needs with the best resources and that includes
preventive medicine through immunizations so the public service
(centros de Salud and National Hospitals) offers only basic immunizations
with BCG, DPT, Polio, Mumps and Measles, for free, no other vaccines
are included.
The immunization schedule should however, include all the vaccines
recommended by the AAP
, especially, in my view, in a country like mine where all the infectious
diseases are more prevalent. All the other immunizations (Hepatitis
A and B, HiB, meningococcal, etc.) are available through private
medicine, unfortunately for most of our people and given the low
per capita income, are not available to everyone. If you are in
an adoption process I will vigorously suggest you check frequently
where and when your child is getting his immunizations as I can
not state enough the importance of receiving them adequately. and
with the best biological products available.
