Why do I Paint Toilets?
The Short Answer:
I dont know.
The Longer Answer:
I dont know. I first did it because I thought it was clever or funny. I thought the toilet had a lot of potential as an image, but I wanted to say something more than a one liner. I kept doing it thinking that eventually the reasons why would become clear. Many theories came and went but they all seemed wrong in one way or another.
After five years of not making a painting without a toilet in it, and still not knowing why I had this fixation, I gave up for a while. I painted myself, the landscape, still life, etc. In a moment of anxiety and indecision with brush in hand, the toilet head form first appeared. I was surprised, amused and horrified in equal parts.
At this point, I know two things. One, the toilet image is inextricably linked to my identity as a painter. Two, I am happier painting what I see than inventing with paint.
The Long Answer:
This also begins with I dont know. But the typed version would be many pages so if you want to know more, just ask.
