Ray Lewis

Biography:

Ray Lewis was born in 1964 in Houston, Texas. His mother is an artist and art teacher, father a historian and a teacher as well. Both took responsibility for seeing to it that Ray was exposed and well influenced. Ray began his undergraduate studies in 1989 at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. He took a year off from his academic pursuits to work cattle in West Texas for his Uncle. Then studied with George Krause for his MFA at the University of Houston, TX. Following that, he spent 10 years as a bike messenger in Chicago and New York, before becoming a digital artist in Manhattan. Always with a camera and always shooting; Personal projects have led him abroad to the UK where he has been, on and off over the past year. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn NY.

Statement:

I impulsively search for the right moment to press  the shutter, rarely looking through the viewfinder, always shooting off the cuff.

To capture a moment, is more important to me, rather than creating a beautiful image. The eye and the hand are irrelevant to this procedure. More important is the timing. I am only capturing a moment that helps me understand what it is that I see and seek. Everyday I am fortunate to witness amazing moments seemingly staged for me, lost between seconds and second glances. These are not just amazing because I witness them, but because of they actually exist. In essence I shoot to show others what I see, as if it were a UFO or a falling star. The pursuit of that moment and being able to place the camera in the right position, be it to my face or in my hand, is the motivation
