The Numerical Rollover

on the passing of time and our marking of it

We know it doesn't really mean much. We need markers, milestones and goalposts, we make them up and then put our burning little candle of faith in them

and so we light fireworks or go dancing all night or go to Trafalgar Square and say to ourselves, 'oh, the New Year, may it be better than the old year...' and clasp our little hands while fervently looking at the changing numbers on the calendar and greet each other with a heartfelt intensity that we seldom allow to come to the surface in the course of normal daily life

maybe because it all reminds us of our mortality and fragility, of the fact that one day soon we won't be here and the world will carry on and follow its course without us. And of all that can happen in our lives before that comes to pass....
