purpose and meaning
The dodgy character in the movie kept talking
about our meaning and our purpose. His own purpose was simple enough, to sell
the movie, keep people going back to every sequel of it, notwithstanding the
grandiloquent talk and a plot with more than a sieve... I am not sure that I
believed, at any time in my adult life, that there was a 'purpose' to our life
external to it. Not that i really rejected the notion of it unexamined and
unopened, I used to say that I thought our purpose in the world, if any, was
learning as much as we could and expand in all the directions possible to us. It
was perhaps a little metaphysical and superstitious but it was also a kind of
elected purpose, not one given by a divinity or by fate. But of course the world
is infinitely larger (and smaller) than us. We can only measure it in respect of
ourselves. Our circumstance may well blind us to much of its nature and workings
which may well be forever beyond our reach or understanding. And
