Most students began their studies on student grade horns. The most popular student models in Hong Kong are the Yamaha 1335, 2335 and the Bach TR300. At times, I feel that such cheaper horns are limiting the progress of some students. I am trying to find out if these student models can be improved. To begin with, I worked on a Yamaha 1335 owned and played by a student at the Kei Wan School.

I have no problem playing this horn but some other students reported they found it very difficult to speak and tone get thin easily.

STEP 1

I first re-positioned the brace between the bell crook and the 1st valve slide.

Observations: the trumpet does respond better with the brace at one position, which is slightly off the factory position.

STEP 2

The mouthpiece receiver and the associated brace are then worked on.

Observations: the trumpet play much easier with the mouthpiece receiver pulled out a bit. There is also one position of the brace that produce the best resonance for the trumpet.

I am very glad to learn that even these student horns can be improved!

Although the finish on the trumpet is no longer perfect, 9-year-old Hei Hei is now producing a more focused, steady tone than before.
