C & D Jarnagin 1858 Smoothside Canteen

The Jarnagin smoothside canteen. The cotton strap has a New York inspector's stamp. I ordered the canteen without the chain, as my research indicates that large numbers of canteens were issued with cord or twine attached to the cork. Twine in the most correct method of the two. The material in the cloth cover is brown jeancloth (you have the option of specifying color and material).

C & D Jarnagin 2 Rivet Bayonet Scabbard

Image 1: The Jarnagin 2 rivet scabbard. Federal troops carrying the Enfield rifle musket should use this type of scabbard. The frog is reinforced with 2 rivets and a triangular stitch pattern, and has a Storms makers mark. This style was present throughout the war, and the reproduction gives one a great deal of flexibility when it comes to tailoring his impression to a specific scenario.

Image 2: The brass scabbard finial. The tips of the 2 and 7 rivet scabbards are virtually identical.

C & D Jarnagin Gum Blanket

The Jarnagin gum blanket was produced by employing a vulcanization process to bond the rubber to the fabric. It also has the properly sized small grommets.

Woodburn-Mount Issue Blanket

Image 1: The Wooburn-Mount blanket. Unlike some sutler blankets, the end stripe is woven in to the blanket. The twill weave is visible, particularly in the stripe. This photo comes close to capturing the blanket's true color.

Image 2: The weave is clearly visible in this enlarges view of the blanket. Red and blue fibers are also present, above the stripe in the center.

Image 3 (below): The three line sewn US, from one of the included templates. Chain stitching would produce letters with solid lines.

Several of the most significant differentves between typical sutler's row reproduction tents and a quality tent are seen in Image 1. Note the handsewn button holes and grommets. Several mainstream vendors are marketing tents with button holes serving as grommets. While this is less conspicuously incorrect, it is an imperfect solution.

The grommets are sewn into a reinforced panel, which may in fact provide significantly greater durability than the common brass grommets. Note the bone button. Shelter tents issued later in the war had paper backed tin buttons.

Image 2: Maker's stamp. The fabric is considerably lighter then that of most reproductions. As with so many quality goods, the high price of a good reproduction may seem daunting, but the knowledge that you now have something that resembles items actually used, as well as the fact that you probably won't have to purchase a replacement in the near future (in case you decide to attend an authentic event) is well worth it,
