A day trip to Lundy Island

Five of us took a trip on the Balmoral to Lundy Island - fortunately on one of the few calm days we'd seen in August.

the weather looked a tad ominous ...
An unconcerned seagull was looking for its other leg..
The Balmoral eased into Minehead.
A farm just west of Minehead...
...with fields that go right down to the sea.
Selworthy Common meets the sea...
Spectacular in the morning light..
Hurlstone Point...
...on a rocky outcrop, just above Bossington.
Glenthorne - a house in an enviable location..
Foreland Point lighthouse...
...clinging to the cliffs near Lynmouth.
A waterfall where U-boats apparently gathered fresh water.
The north Devon coastline stretching West...
...purple with heather on the headlands.
Heddon's Mouth.
Watching the coast go by...
Penny hangs on to her hat (it was breezy...)
A gannet glides over the waves...
...just staying clear of the water.
A life on the ocean wave ...
The church on lundy.
Lundy residents see us arrive...
...and head for the water...
...taking a last look before making themselves scarce.
The Balmoral by the jetty on the island.
The broken spine of the island.
A chicken taking a dust bath!
Some of the four-legged locals.
The heather was out on the top of the island.
A fresh-water pond perched on top of the rock.
Apparently it takes two to change a lens...
A distant view of one of the island's lighthouses.
A house that couldn't stand up to the elements.
A former lighthouse?
Colour contrasts between rock and heather.
Some of the soay sheep living wild on Lundy.
The spectacular rocky cliffs...
... made up of slabs of granite.
A late lunch-break...
Penny and Lizignore the yawning drop just behind them...
A young fox-moth caterpillar (I think)
This stonecrop made acolourful splash on the rock.
Sheep looking very much at home in their environment.
Rain was heading our way (but didn't bother us at all).
Some of the rocks looked sculpted...
... and stood as pillars on the shore.
The lighthouse provided a man-made version.
At least you could get a bath on the island...
The Balmoral returned to collect us...
... and a fulmar flew alongside
... just skimming the water.
A gannet stood out against the coloured cliff-face.
The coastline started to fade...
... into the dusk...
... and a last gull stopped following the boat and went on its way.
