Presenting Asia's Newest Jazz Label | |||||||||||||||
Dec 6th 2004 marked the launch date of Singapores & Asia's newest jazz label, Jazznote Records. The brainchild of Singaporean jazzman Jeremy Monteiro, Jazznote is a division of Showtime Productions Pte. Ltd., which was established in 1987. Showtime Productions is well known for being the Producer of the Singapore International Jazz Festival in 2001 and has been involved in producing jazz-related events in Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and Malaysia. Showtime also manages JJ Jazz Records, the predecessor of Jazznote Records, which has been recording albums since Singapores first digital jazz recording in 1986, the Jeramzee & Friends album, Back To Basics. JAZZNOTE kicks off with two great singers making their debut CD releases on Jazznote Records. Anne Weerapass Out Of Nowhere and Rani Singams With A Song In My Heart raise the level of straight-ahead jazz vocal recordings in Asia to new heights. Both albums feature smooth, seemingly effortless delivery by both Anne Weerapass, in her sultry and soulful style and Rani Singam, in her swinging and polished delivery. One word comes to mind when listening to these recordings and that word is, authentic. The albums are recorded, mixed and mastered in Los Angeles in various session in June, October and November 2004, by ace Recording engineer Paul Tavenner of Big City Recording in Los Angeles, the albums boast excellent recording quality, pristine clarity, impressive signal-to-noise ratio. Eventhough the two albums are released in 44.1 kHz CD format, they will impress even the most discerning audiophile, who are used to listening to SACD and DVD Music CDs. Both albums feature Jeremy Monteiro on piano, Belinda Moody on doublebass, Shawn Kelley on Drums and Mohammed Noor on percussions. Additionally, top selling South East Asian Saxophonist Mr. Saxman Koh from Bangkok (whose debut album, Mr. Saxman sold in excess of 100,000 copies in Thailand alone) plays sax on Annes CD and Greg Fishman (part of the famed duo, Two For Brazil voted Chicagos Best Jazz Act in 2002) plays sax on Ranis album. The album photos were shot by celebrity photographer Russel Wong and the cover art is designed by Malaysian Graphics Designer I-Ming. Jazznote will re-release the best albums from the JJ Jazz back-catalog and plans to release a modest two to four brand new CDs each year. Upcoming, in the 2nd quarter of 2005 will be Jeremy Monteiros first album of originals in 14 years. The album is his Cultural Medallion grant project from the National Arts Council of Singapore and will feature, among others, two-time Grammy Award winning saxophonist Ernie Watts. Watts also collaborates in writing two songs with Monteiro. Also slated for release is a duo album by Chicago saxman Greg Fishman & Jeremy Monteiro. Both albums are in the final stages of completion.
