The ol' blog has been a bit thin lately, as we prepare for the 2007 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona (new fan guide is now online - and much more news to be announced very soon.) and the eighth full season for Dale Jr. and the No. 8 Budweiser team. But, before the unending onslaught begins, I managed to slip away for a few final days of relaxation.
Thanks to the fine folks at AAA Carolinas, I was asked to write an article about winter driving techiniques for their GO magazine, and spend some time at the Bridgestone Winter Driving School and the Center for Driving Sciences in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. While there, the main focus was testing the amazing new high-tech Bridgestone Blizzak tires and learning first-hand how to put the proper techniques into action. It's an experience I recommend to anyone who enjoys driving - or anyone who really wants to learn how to properly drive on snow or ice. |
While I can't give away the finer points of the school (you'll have to check out the magazine if you're a member of AAA), I can say it was an extremely fun time driving on an ice hockey rink, as well as the scenic, mountainside courses of ice and packed snow prepared by the school. With instruction from pro drivers with eclectic backgrounds in racing (open-wheel champions, rallying, motorcycles and downhill skiing were just a few I spoke to or worked with), I was able to spend much of the day hauling around the various courses in (sometimes) controlled slides and hard-core skidding. Great fun.
