The Land of the Free Because of the Brave

If you've read this blog for any length of time, you know my views about the current administration running this country by criminal means and starting an unneccesary war in Iraq, while secretly undoing centuries of constitutional liberties and rights from all citizens.

But, the story that has sickened me most recently doesn't involve the needless deaths of thousands of our troops or scores of innocent Iraqi civilians - it's the story of the total and complete disregard this administration has for the troops who have returned home from the war with untold mental and physical ailments.

Check out the Washington Post's story about the horrid conditions at Walter Reed Hospital and then tell me with a straight face whether this prez and his cronies really care about the troops. I think not. (His spokeperson said Dubya learned of the poor conditions only after the Post story was released- despite many highly publicized photo ops for the prez at Walter Reed. Apparently, he only visits the "clean" areas of the hospital - like when he visited New Orleans after Katrina and gave a speech from a brightly-lit Jefferson Square. After the prez left, the neighborhood was once again plunged into darkness.)

No matter your political bent or your view of the war, I hope we all can agree that the right thing to do is to take care of the brave young men and women who volunteered to fight for our country, no matter how inept the political leadership may be. It should be top priority to do whatever is necessary to take care of them and their families, and not force them to fight for benefits or the proper treatment.

If you are as outraged as I am by this treatment, you can donate to help the soldiers and their families who are housed at military hospitals. I can HIGHLY recommend Barry Zito's Strikeouts for Troops. I sent my donation today, and I encourage you to do the same. Because we need to take care of those who are brave enough to take care of us.
