The late, great combo Lions and Dogs. Based in Lawrence, Kansas, when Lawrence had a thriving local scene.
Starring Todd Newman and Michael Welsh on guitars/bass/vocals. Some idiot 8-fingered drummer (now an aging, pathetic publicity hack) also included. Only the best of the early to mid-1980s.

Every rock cliche applies:
+ self-destructive leader who occasionally chose not to wear pants
+ "grunge" before "grunge" was hip, cool or profitable
+ key member leaves to become an accountant
+ great songs, poor recordings
+ signed record contract only to see the label go bankrupt before album was finished (label later reformed and signed Jane's Addiction and Guns and Roses)
+ alternately brilliant and calamitous live shows, most ruined by stage fright and drunkeness.
+ first gig was opening act for the Suburbs at First Avenue in Minneapolis, where Prince's "Purple Rain" had just been filmed.
+ Opened for alterna-legends The Replacements multiple times.
+ Opened for non-alterna-legends the Neats, the Del Fuegos, Tupelo Chain Sex, Throwing Muses, the Three O'Clock and countless others.
+ Had pizza and beer with Bob Mould.
+ Bass player once so drunk and full of stage fright, played most of major concert hiding behind the PA stacks.
+ Chooglin'
+ Mocked REM's Peter Buck while Buck was in audience.
+ Also performed under various guises for no apparent reason: Fire Cassidy, the Leatherwoods, Swingin' Dicks, Jackalopes
+ Kicked off stage and the airwaves while competing in local Battle of the Bands in Topeka, Ks. Defied local ez-listening station by turning up to "10" and playing faster and louder until being begged to stop.
+ Known for playing obscure covers from Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steely Dan, Wreckless Eric, Big Star, Comsat Angels, Blue Oyster Cult, ABBA, Iggy Pop and god-knows-what-else.
+ Often quarrelled on-stage, usually drummer became increasingly irritated at playing same crappy song for 10-12 minutes. Solution: drummer gives up and walks off stage. |
