Eyes on the Budweiser Shootout: The Budweiser Shootout was the most watched televised sporting event of the weekend. The ratings were up 31% versus last year - and - in the words of USA Today - "achieved weekend's highest sports rating, even though Saturday night programming traditionally is week's lowest-rated." I am thoroughly convinced the ratings spike was due solely to Mike Davis and his "50 Reasons to Watch the Budweiser Shootout." Welllllll, Mike's list was to convince you to actually BUY a ticket, but if you chose to stay bundled up at home, thanks for tuning in.

Watch for coverage today as Dale Jr. joins nine other legends as a part of "NASCAR'S GATHERING OF CHAMPIONS." Only those who have won the Daytona 500 are eligible, and ten drivers have been invited as Dale Jr. joins icons such as Mario Andretti, Junior Johnson, Bobby Allison and Marvin Panch this afternoon. How cool is that? Check back here tomorrow morning (Wednesday) for a sneak preview of another major magazine cover featuring Dale Jr.

DaDWDVD: Darrell Waltrip: Passion Behind the Wheel , the DVD of DW's life and career is a well-edited, touching portrait of a passionate man and his family. In an eager effort to become racing's version of NFL Films, NASCAR Images places their name and logo above Darrell's in the actual title and on the cover, but that's a minor bitch with a nicely done story. I thought it was a too heavy on the Big E focus and light on DW's entertaining stories, but that's why you also need to buy DW, The Book as a package deal. Between the two, you can learn the real love story off the track between Darrell and Stevie and their two girls... Don't miss the special features - including Darrell as a drill sargeant at Darlington. Funny stuff. (Though I cringed when, in a glossy intro for their "2004 in Review' disc, the deep-throated narrator described Elliott Sadler as "NASCAR's loveable loser..." A bit harsh and inaccurate, dontcha think?)

"There are so many car chases in movies. But, have you ever noticed there aren't many car chases in books?" -- Eddie Izzard / "Unrepeatable" DVD
