Unofficial Celebrity Report: The Guitar and Anti-Pop

Someone asked about the Bud/#8 guitar Dave Grohl is playing in the photo from several days ago. It is a limited-edition Gibson Les Paul-model, designed by Sam Bass (who also did several "Big E" custom designs for Gibson) and released in late 2000.

The backstory about Grohl playing the guitar is rather bittersweet, and can be read here. Grohl also played the guitar during an MTV "Rock the Vote" benefit. Because the photo gave a better view of Dave's hair than the guitar, I've included several views of it here.

Since I'm short a few fingers, I don't play the guitar too well, but serial number DEJR-003, or the third of the 300 built by Gibson (and signed by Bass) makes a fine addition to the decor of my living room. It's one of my most prized possessions and was a gift from Junior after the 2000 season.

Canada's own Matthew Good - a huge hit in his home country but seemingly unable to get arrested in the States (wait. I take that back. See the video linked below) - also has one of the guitars in his collection. Dale Jr. was to fly to Vancouver to appear in a Matthew Good Band video scheduled to be shot September 11, 2001, but - for obvious reasons - was unable to go to Canada from a test session at the then-brand-new Kansas Speedway. Instead, about ten of us in the Bud bunch packed all of our bags into two rental vans and drove the sixteen hours back to Charlotte.

But, our story ends happily as Matthew and Junior were able to get together in December of that year to create the high-flyin' ANTI-POP video. Memphis, Padre Island, the Alamo and Las Vegas may never be the same after Matt, Junebug, the Gnome and the crew blew through on their whirlwind video snapshot tour. Watch as our young heroes turn to a life of crime and end up in the Padre Island hoosegow... Luckily, cooler heads prevailed and the gnome was able to spring 'em and they were again on their way. (Have ya ever been on Padre Island in December? I wouldn't recommend it...)
