 Though the Budweiser team did not win a race for the first time in a season since 2000, all is not lost as yours truly secured the prestigious and awe-inspiring 2007 Golden Benny Memorial Karting League Championship at the Victory Lane Karting Center in Charlotte. The year-long epic battle royale for points was technically over before the night began as the second-place points man remained somewhere in southern Florida, opening the way for me to somehow snag a third and a first-place finish in this evening's season-closing races.
So, I humbly accept thanks for saving face for the entire Bud team for the season (wink) and doff the chapeau to all of the absolutely superb guys I've raced with and against for several years. It's always the highlight of my month. (And what good is having a blog if ya can't occasionally selfishly crow, brag and chest-pound?!?) Thanks to the good folks from SPEED and "Wind Tunnel" who made this month's event complete. |
 On a more serious note, the trophy is a great reminder of Benny Parsons. It is the remnants from the ol' original Golden Benny Award that the late Parsons would present to a team which exhibited superior results on pit lane each week. However, many of the teams (including the #8 bunch) began to suffer horrible results immediately after receiving the award for the previous race, and the rumblings began to build about The Curse of the Golden Benny. At the end of the season, several Cup teams joined in to take a sledgehammer to the hardware to end the curse. BUT, GBMKL founder Marty Snider was able to salvage the pieces and, with a lil' SuperGlue, it became a part of the karting league and each winner is required to add something to the hideous creation. (Trust me, the Clay Aiken bobblehead is not my addition.) |
