The worst-kept secret was made official this morning. Check out my buddy DW and several new commercials announcing the arrival of the Toyota Camry in the Nextel Cup Series in 2007. And before we get all of the predictable cries of "I'm never gonna be a NASCAR fan again because they let a foreign manufacturer in..." - remember two things: 1.) Daimler-Chrysler is a German company and 2.) in the midst of the new world-wide economy, Toyota employs more than 140,000 Americans.
It's going to significantly raise the cost to remain competitive for the existing manufacturers, despite NASCAR's other big announcement today of the planned schedule for the less-expensive, butt-ugly "Car of Tomorrow." Teams are limited in their spending ONLY by the amount they are able to earn through sponsorship, winnings or an owner's willingness to dig into his pockets. The top teams will always have an advantage, no matter the public announcements of the Car of Tomorrow leveling the field for the so-called "little guy." But, if the new car is indeed safer for the drivers, I can't complain too much about it being one of the ugliest race car designs I've ever seen.
Anyone have a favorite ugly race car from the past? My nomination: the all-wheel-drive, day-glo orange "whooshmobile" that nearly carried Parnelli Jones to a turbine-powered victory in the 1967 Indy 500. SO ugly it was cool...

| Though the details are fuzzy, it's exciting to hear NASCAR will begin producing new statistics this year that reflect the modern timing and scoring system. If other pro sports are any indication, more accurate and more detailed statistics can improve the experience for die-hard fans. |
