Eagle-Eye Hamlin

Dale Jr. has always insisted superior eyesight is a trait he and his father shared and is an attribute that is a big part of being a successful racecar driver.

On that basis, we had a hint Denny Hamlin was going to be damn sharp in the Budweiser Shootout. Before Thursday night's draw party to set the starting lineup, we were setting the stage and getting the technical aspects in place when Hamlin and his PR rep Jon Mason walked through the room after a media day photo shoot.

I pointed out the huge stage backdrop - which had the names of each driver lining the far sides of huge Budweiser Shootout logos.

"How does it feel to have your name up there?" I asked Hamlin. "It's spelled right, isn't it?"

"Mine is," Denny answered quickly, "but, Bill Elliott's is not..."

He was correct: somehow between approval of the artwork and the production of the giant backdrop, Awesome Bill's last name had lost its' final "t." No one else had noticed it while the backdrop had been up the full day.

Luckily, there was time for a talented production man - nicknamed "Cupcake" - to use a lift to reach near the top of the backdrop and craft a near-perfect "t" out of white gaffer's tape before the show began. I defy anyone to spot the quick-fix in any pics or video of the event.

To again quote Driver #8: Junior once said to me, "once an asshole, always an asshole..." And, two men who consistently put the capital-A in Ass are Scott Stapp and Dick Cheney. Close behind, there's a tie between Karl Rove and Jack Abramoff. I was encouraged to add dubya to the list, but I see him more as one cartoonist has dubbed him, Clueless George.

Running Paul Hackett Out of the Race: Another example of why the Dems continue to be utterly ineffectual. One hopes Iraq war veteran Hackett reconsiders his decision to leave politics permanently.

If you're tired of the Squidoo mentions, don't look now, but CNN featured it last week and it continues to grow. (See who's number one in the "sports" category! Yeah, there are Junior pics, so scroll down...)

And has anyone noticed the guy wearing a Dale Jr. bike helmet in the trailer/commercial for the new movie, "Failure to Launch?"
