Indy Car driver Paul Dana died this morning after a warm-up session crash before today's race at Homestead-Miami. He was airlifted to a nearby trauma center after crashing into Ed Carpenter, who spun in front of him. Dana was 30 years old.
I first met Paul in the mid-1990s when he was a journalist with AutoWeek magazine, and he worked a series of odd jobs for years to get to the IRL. Through his marketing efforts, he brought Ethanol sponsorship into the sport, and started last season with a low-budget team. After several races last season, he suffered lower spine fractures in a practice crash at Indy that ended his season as a driver. This year, he had signed with Rahal-Letterman and seemed set to have a team capable of giving him a quality ride.
We'll learn more soon, but it's a sad day to lose another friend in the sport.
Our thought are with Dana's wife and family. |
