Saturday Update: Get Well Richie Gilmore!
----
Dale Jr. said this afternoon on the team radio after drafting practice, "school is over..." He had, as usual, schooled the rest of the field during the session.
While I try not to wax too poetic or rest upon hyperbole too often, watching Dale Jr. on a restrictor plate track is a thing of beauty to be savored. Especially during practice, when he is apparently able to do whatever he likes with the Bud No. 8 car. He'll mix it up in the pack for a few laps, then shoot forward to lead (seemingly at will) and then when he's bored with that, he'll tell the crew he's dropping back. He will slide out of line and drop behind the pack of cars he had been leading, and then after falling a considerable distance behind - where an amateur observer believes the draft is surely lost - he slices back to the pack with relative ease. The precision, the bravery and the sheer confidence is impressive to behold, even for someone who has been around the sport for decades.
While race day here at Talladega will be an exciting one, and we expect no change to the usual sight of the red car leading a significant portion of the day, the real art and beauty takes place during practice. Come raceday, it'll be more brute force.
Tune in Sunday. It's going to be one helluva show.
Session two radio chatter highlight:
Tony Eury Jr: "Alright, that's 21 laps there. Wave 'em off there and bring it in..."
Dale Jr. (like a nine year old): I wanna run some more! Damn it!"
(he did pull in and practice ended early for a stout Bud Car...)
------
I know Dario and Scott Speed got all of the attention before today's ARCA race - but I recommend you add 18-year old Colin Braun (pronounced 'Brown') to your list of future superstars along with other youngsters like Joey Logano, Brad Coleman and Marc Davis.
