Junior's New Number and Sponsor is...

I have NO idea. I just thought I'd go for a similar trick twice in a row. Hey! If it worked once...

And, no, I really don't have a clue what it is, so no avalanche of emails begging me to spill the beans. I have no beans to spill. I'll learn it when the rest of the world does. (My guess on the number? I believe it will be something between 1 and 100.)

Inane Headline of the Year: "Is Stepmom Sabotaging Junior's Engines?" It's ridiculous, but that's the header on the Yahoo.com front page today. It's the current leader for worst headline of the year - but we still have a few months to go... (Remember last year's "Why Fans Hate Dale Jr.?")

The actual story isn't much better, simply referring to unnamed "conspiracy theorists." In actuality, those theorists are journalists who had to sit around the media center all day, waiting for the night race at Richmond. Or the night race at Fontana. Or any of the other races that start at 2 pm. It's a lot of waiting, which means more time for idle myth-making and speculation. YES - the engines have been very fragile this year - but to suggest a conspiracy is a slap to everyone on the Bud crew who have worked so hard this season.

Dario to NASCAR?: He says he's not decided, but if IRL Champ Dario Franchitti were to come over to the dark side, he'd be a welcome addition. A superb guy and truly one of the nicest drivers I've worked with, it wouldn't be the first time Dario has raced a tin-top. (I've written about Dario before. Click here and here.)

From 1995 to 1997, Dario was one of the Mercedes-Benz development drivers in the German Touring Car Championship (better known as DTM) and the International Touring Car Championship (aka ITC). These were great cars - very technologically advanced (unlike a Cup car)- and Dario did quite well, finishing in top-five in points each season before being promoted to a Mercedes Champ Car ride. Strangely enough - if you look at the model of his 1995 ride (above), the CoT looks suprisingly similar!

As for Franchitti's likely future teammate Montoya, I am only aware of a single event where he raced anything other than an open-wheel car before his suprising move last year. That was also for Mercedes in the ITC, at Silverstone in 1996. The two drivers are also linked by virtue of finishing in a tie for the 1999 CART Championship, with Montoya getting the nod for more victories. I think that may be foreshadowing of things to come: Montoya is a more aggressive driver, likely to win more races but also more like to crash, while Franchitti is more in the mold of a Jeff Burton - brainy, steady and consistent. However, Dario had some wild shunts this year, didn't he?!
