Shit Hits the Fans

Why Dale Jr. WILL be fined and penalized for uttering one of George Carlin's seven words you can't say on televison: Because he said "shit." No way NASCAR lets it slide. If Michael Powell and the FCC doesn't do it first, the motorsports media, who delight in calling the No. 8 Bud car "the company car" because of their perception of favored-boy status by NASCAR, would absolutely have a hissy fit if it doesn't happen. Media members were already calling for scalps - screaming into the phone of the track's media rep before the victory lane ceremonies were even completed. The only thing NASCAR fears more than Democrats is negative media coverage, so look for at least $10,000 and 25 points being moved from Junior's in-box to the out-box this week. Besides, NASCAR has precedence for previous infractions, even when drivers or crew chiefs uttered one of the seven words even when they were not aware they were on-air... and, well, you know, he did say "shit" on national television.

Why this shouldn't be a big concern for the Chase: The Bud team seems to react well to adversity. They had a productive two-day test at Kansas, and they have great momentum. This is a team that would be on a streak of eight consecutive top-10s if not for a cut tire on the last lap at Indianapolis. The driver is healthy. Confidence is high. Take the points and the money - but the win and the momentum still stand.

This is also a prime example of the need for at least a seven-second network delay. If the networks and the sanctioning body are scared of emotion and the potential for cursing, get the button out... or order up a lot of those Kenseth robots for each driver...

Why it's still frustrating: One word uttered at the height of emotion will overshadow a brilliant drive from 11th to first in the final five laps. But, he did say it. he'll pay for it and take the fight to the field in the final seven events...
