Pool
Photos of our visit to the massive Toshima-en pool and amusment park complex in July, 2004

We got up at 6 a.m. to beat the rush. Here we're in line with our tickets.
Map of the pool area at Toshima-en. Note the long circular pool at left.
Shoes are forbidden within the entire pool area, just like in a Japanese home.
People with tattoos are forbidden to enter the pool area.
The pool area is empty immediately after opening.
There are pools of all shapes and sizes, some with current and some without.
This area will be crammed with human bodies in a few hours.
A view from the top of the water slide.
Note the large circular pool. It has a current that sweeps people along.

The amusement park portion of Toshima-en is visible in the distance.

Setting up our tent. We're early so we get a great spot, and a table!
Off to the water!
We bought a boat for the occasion.
Jay and his Ji-chan and Ba-chan get in the circular pool.
And away they go!
Rumi naps in the tent.
Lunch at our hard-won table.
The pool area is beginning to fill up.
People cram their towels and plastic sheets into every available area.
The park will be even more crowded in a few hours, though.
The wave pool.
A massive jungle-gym-type area for children.
The ban on tattoos obviously didn't bother this guy! (Lousy photo, sorry.)
Nap time
After leaving the pool area, we had coffee in the amusement park area.
The beetle petting zoo. Japanese children love huge beetles.
Papa meets a hercules beetle.
A trapeze artist follows a juggling show.
Jay and papa share two flavors of ice.
Jay and Ji-chan ride the train.
Coin-operated fire truck.
We rode the steam engine, too!
