In case you haven't guessed yet, I'm the one wearing sunglasses; the other two are Rebeca and Rute. They can tell you much more about me than what you will be able to read in this page, of course...

The place is Berlengas islands, off the coast of Peniche in Portugal. A place well worth a visit, especially if you like Hitchcock's "The Birds".

Biography

I was born in 1961 in Lisbon, Portugal. I graduated in Mathematics from the University of Lisbon (Faculty of Sciences) in 1985, and obtained my PhD in Mathematics from the Technical University of Lisbon (Faculty of Engineering) in 1989, where I became Assistant Professor and, in April 1992, Associate Professor. I joined the Department of Informatics of the University of Lisbon in June 1993 as an Associate Professor. In November 1998, I received my"agregação" (a degree obtained after PhD for becoming professor). I am now Professor of Software Science and Engineering at the Department of Computer Science, University of Leicester.

Until December 1993 I was also a researcher at INESC (Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores), where I was leader of the Logic Engineering Group. I was senior researcher at the Laboratory for Computational Models and Architectures between 1998 and 2001. In 2002 I became leader of the Laboratory for Global Computing (LabMOL) at the University of Lisbon.

I held a grant for post-doctoral studies at Imperial College, London, from October 1988 to March 1991. I was again on sabbatical leave at Imperial College from March to September 1994. Between January and August 2000 I was on leave at King's College London. I was a visiting scientist at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ) in May-June 1998, the SRI International in July-August 1998 and 1999, and the University of Pisa in April 2001 and April-May 2006.

I am a member of the Editorial Board of Information Processing Letters, Science et Technique Informatiques and the Journal of the Brasilian Computer Society.

I became chairman of the IFIP WG 1.3 (Foundations of System Specification) in January 2004, having been a member of the group since 1998. I am also, ex officio, chairman of the Steering Committee of the Workshop on Algebraic Development Techniques (WADT).

I was chairman of the Steering Committee of ETAPS, the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software, between April 2001 and March 2004, after having organised its first instance (1998) and been treasurer until March 2001. I am now chairman of the Steering Committee of the Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science (CALCO) and was Programme co-chair of its first edition.

Leicester

What about Leicester?

Did you say "Lesster"?

Well, Leicester is more than one of the funny exceptions of English grammar, where the way you read it is not the way you say it...

Did you know that the Philarmonia (yes, the famous orchestra) has one of its residences at de Monfort Hall (itself an excellent concert hall)? And that the University itself runs a series of concerts, which included a yearly season of 8/9 performances by the famous Lindsay Quartet (unfortunately, they have now retired). There are also two local symphony orchestras (the Bardi and Leicester Symphony), many jazz concerts, just to mention the music that I like most...

If you like living in a city, there are re-developments all over the centre, making loft-style living just a problem of choice... If you like living in a small, remote, village, Leicestershire is typical "rural Britain"...

If, like me, you are mad about cheese, welcome to Stilton country! Long Clawson, Colston-Basset and Cropwell Bishop are just a short (and pleasant) drive away.

You can also find an excellent selection of cheese and other delicattesses at David North's, in Rothley, a heaven for the gourmet! It is not easy to find (289 Station Road) but even Henrietta managed to spot it! And while you are there, visit one of the many farms that will sell you fresh produce, preserves, ... After a journey on the Great Central Railway, of course!

Leicester is very proud of its local market (I particularly like the fresh seafood - including fresh scallops and oysters - and game - wild hare, partridge, pheasant, goose, ... ). And there are plenty of restaurants offering all sorts of food. My current favourite is The Opera House. If you have time to drive out of town, then The Olive Branch is a good place to go and the way there will take you through splendid scenery.

So, as you can see, lots of scope for research!

But this is just my personal view... You can get more information about Leicester if you follow this link.
