Star Trek dice is perfect for miniatures gaming, which is how the designer ran his playtest sessions. The Fleet Battle Rules will allow you to do this. All you need are some counters or miniatures to represent your spaceships on a square grid map.

You can use the ship facing die that comes with each set to represent your spaceship. Next best are top-down views of the spaceships themselves, found either on the 'net or in some of the Star Trek roleplaying books. Best of all are the Micro Machines from Galoob (look on eBay). They are a few inches in length and come painted. Furuta also makes Star Trek spaceships but they are twice as big (I have a Prometheus and it's over 5 inches long). Personally I'd recommend the Star Trek Micro Machines set 1, which can be had for around $20 and you get the Galaxy, Vor'cha and a Borg Cube. The Excelsior can stand in for the Enterprise-E.

If you get some Micro Machines, the display stands they provide don't work very well. Litko Aerosystems made me some custom acrylic display stands. These work great! I ordered two sizes from them:

1) 1-3/8" hexagonal base with 1/8" diameter x 1-3/4" high rod and

2) 1" square base with 1/8" diameter x 1-3/4" high rod.

The stand was assembled by twisting the rod into the hole. No problems here as Litko uses precision laser cutting. The holes for the Micro Machines are less than 1/8" diameter so I used a drill with 1/8" bit to enlarge the hole.

Here are a couple of images of the Romulan D'deridex and the Litko stands:

My previous alternative was balsa wood bases with thin wooden dowels. They were not the most durable, with about 20% of them breaking after several games: How to Build Stands (6 kb txt file 11/8/98). Here are some images of the Micro Machines Vor'cha.
