The Sandman
A comic book I have been reading
A coworker gave me a bound collection of a series
of comic books called The Sandman
Library by supercool author Neil Gaiman, and I
have just been loving it. It is horror, and it is disturbing, but the point of
the whole thing is developing the stories and the characters just like any other
good writing... the creepy gore and unsettling imagery is just a medium to
communicate in.
Since I haven't read
comics (graphic novels to the snooty) in such a long time, it is taking me a
while to remember how to enjoy these books. I have to stop myself in mid-page
turn at times because I have forgotten to look at the pictures that make this
whole comic-business so great. And the pictures ARE great. When the whole
thing works, it is like the best parts of books combined with the best parts of
movies: visually engrossing, intricate stories, body language, punctuation...
Also, there is something really cool
about reading hand-lettered text, which you probably won't find in other kinds
of writing. I recommend it.
