Beautiful day...


...in Japan??

It was a gorgeous day. The tradewinds were back, making 85 degrees feel like 85 degrees instead of the 99 it's felt like the past few days. I had Election Day off, so caught up on errands. Safety-checked & oil-changed the car, then got my glasses adjusted, checks cashed, goodies purchased, and voted.

Took my camera along, as usual. The best shot of the day was the one on the left, a reproduction of the torii gate in Miyajima, Japan. But instead of "floating" in the water, it sits in a little triangular section of land between Jiffy Lube and my optometrist's office. Next to it is the picture I took of the original torii gate when I visited Japan my first and only time in 2001 .

"5 Days with Katrina"


A must-see

If this were a Hollywood movie, critics might say it started off too slowly. But this is definitely no movie, though the serendipitous ending might make it seem so.

Alvaro's 197-picture slide show with captions gives an incredible first-person account of the city as it weathered the storm, and how people were relieved and optimistic when most parts emerged mostly unscathed. The city and its people changed two days later when the floods came and they barely made it out intact.

A really hot car


Literally

My friend Willy took these pictures as the car unexpectedly burst into flames. He said there was no collision, and fortunately, no one was hurt. I don't have any other details, maybe he'll actually comment to this (hint-hint) and tell us more!
