Peter Wheeler, the chairman of TVR from 1980 to 2004, has died.

Wheeler was in charge of TVR during some of the company's finest modern years, launching lightweight and powerful rear-wheel drive Blackpool-built sportscar including the Chimaera and Griffith, and the Cerbera, Tuscan, Tamora and Sagaris with TVR's own engine. Wheeler passed away during the night on Thursday, June 11 after a short illness.

He had sold TVR to Russian busienssman Nikolai Smolenski in 2004, but this didn't stop Wheeler continuing to indulge his automotive passion -- in 2008 he built an 'RRV' (a rapid response vehicle) called the Scamander.

Wheeler's death comes just over a year after the death of TVR founder Trevor Wilkinson.

The Latest on TVR

Well, the latest on TVR is that there is nothing to report. It’s been not quite a year since Russian owner Nikolai Smolenski called the press and some TVR owners/club members to a location in northwest England to unveil what they called the “Sagaris II”, with indications that this would herald the restart of production of TVRs including the Sagaris II and revised Tuscan models. But, as appears to be the norm for the “kid wonder” (Smolenski), absolutely nothing has taken place in the ten months since then.

Since Smolenski repurchased TVR after it was put on the block a couple of years ago, basically nothing has happened. It appears to the casual observer that the brand continues to be nothing more than a playtoy for the well-heeled twenty-something Russian. After efforts by an American group to reach some sort of agreement with Smolenski broke down a couple of years ago with his refusal to sign anything, TVR, as an active marque producing vehicles, has basically been dead.

While Multipart has the rights to produce parts for the more recent models to supply owners and shops with the items they need, no new cars have been produced
since sometime early in 2007 other than a handful that a couple of dealers have built from leftover components.

This is a real shame for a marque with TVRs colorful history. Perhaps, when Smolenski finally grows tired of his TVR playtoy, (or when his dad finally tells him to stop wasting money), then, perhaps, he’ll finally get serious about selling the company. The question then, of course, is will there be any serious buyers out there with the financial wherewithal, the business acumen, and the determination to revive TVR as a marque? Only time will tell.

TVR Founder Trevor Wilkinson dead at 85 years old.

It is with sadness we note the passing of Trevor Wilkinson, who started TVR in the 1940s. The name "TVR" is taken from his first name: TreVoR. He passed away at the age of 85 in a hospital in Menorca where he had been for the last couple of weeks. He was not in pain at the time of his death. We will have more later, but suffice it to say, this is a great loss for us in the TVR community and for those of us who had an opportunity to meet Trevor, we are all the better for it.

The New York Times ran an Obituary for Mr. Wilkinson. Read it. Our own club president Marshall Moore is quoted in it and the source of most of the information (the correct parts....)
