Anniversary Sonnet
Three years the earth has run its course around
The sun. Earth's steady tilt spreads heat and light
From pole to pole and warms a varied ground
So all may know their dark times and their bright.
Just so our lives have run a three-year course
About the sun, our Lord, whose endless sight
Gives forth the fuel that gives the sun its force,
And sheds on us the steady rain of right.
Our tilt is more extreme than most I think--
Lord's light beats down at times beyond our strength,
And then we lean away and spirits sink,
So we are pulled along a winter's length.
This course I run with you, my love, each year,
And will, I hope, as long as eyes can see,
Until, hands linked, and with no earthly fear,
We crash into that Sun, eternity.
