State Tool is primarily an application distribution tool. State Tool
allows Mac OS X lab admins to capture changes in system states between
application installs; with this information, the lab admin is then able
to create "Application Wrappers," which are containers for all the changes
made. Place one of these applications wrappers on a server and then having
an end user opening it would cause all the changes to be applied to the current
system. So instead of having to create new images and distributing them to an
entire lab, State Tool allows applications to be distributed when the user needs
it, allowing for image sizes to be drastically cut and image deployment time to be
cut significantly.
State Tool also comes with a command line tool called CLVerify, which can distribute
applications even when no one is logged into a machine. A contextual menu plugin
is also provided, making it possible to redistribute applications with two mouse clicks.
