First High School Match
Sunday, August 31, 2008
So I decided to try my hand at high school matches
this season. Obtaining a high school license is
really pretty simple - just a two hour open-book
rules test. 75% later and you're ready to go. Luckily
my first match was with two seasoned officials.
My position was AR on the coaches side. The match was bewteen two smaller schools and ended 1-0. I was amazed at how laid back the other two officials were and how well the school representatives treated us. It definitely was an enjoyable experience.
The only thing of note was something I had seen before, but I thought would never happen to me. Attacking player was running up my sideline with a defender in hot pursuit. I was running with them - watching closely for the ball to cross the line. It did. I stopped, switched the flag to the right hand, raised the flag... And there the flag went - about 20 yards down the field! Kept my cool and just signaled like I had a flag. Of course an ovation ensued from the fans.
Who said high school matches are that bad? I guess I'll just have to see...

Girls Don't Do That!
Sunday, August 24, 2008
Yes, there is definitely a difference in how boys and
girls play the game of soccer. I've coached all ages
of boys and girls, and am very thankful for that
insight. Anyone who has been involved in this sport
for a decent amount of time and disagrees is just
plain ignorant. The best example is Anson Dorrance's accounts of his
transition from the male to the female side of
the sport. If we don't respect these
differences, we will fail miserably. That being
said... If a player wants to cheat, they will.
Girls can do it just as well as guys.
