Julio Macat Kent Film Festival Workshop on Cinematography, Lighting and role of Director of Photography- Very Cool Lighting tip

Wow is all I can say...great and compelling information from Julio Macat , a man who has and continues to make his mark in the film industry. This year's festival was fortunate to have him speak along with his wife Elizabeth Perkins. I think we all know the Home Alone Movies...well this is the guy behind the way they look. He mentioned one of his favorite scenes is when Mcauley Culkin walks into the church (know this one?...great!). Note(disclaimer): (the information is my interpretation of the workshop or what I thought he said/covered. So what 3 things do all DPs(Directors of Photography) Know? or have to take into consideration... 1. Taking a good picture, framing, establishing shot(wide shot) tells a story. 2. Camera Movement- opening shots and ending shot. 3. Creating the look and mood with lighting. Speaking of lighting "the magic hour. " Landscape artists know it. It happens early in the day and later in the day when you are not sure whether to put on your car headlights or not. This is when Everything on camera looks good or you have a better chance of it looking good with no special, or limited spot lighting. About a half an hour window of time.

"read more" for his tip on simple but effective extra mood lighting...great for filmmakers, event videographers, or interviewers on a budget.

Elizabeth Perkins Gives Worshop at Kent Film Festival to Young Actors - Very Cool Vibe

This years Kent Film Festival , again featured some great workshops including the one given by Elizabeth Perkins (Watch her on Weeds) , on acting. What I liked is her vibe. Her husband Julio Macat backlit her as she sat cross legged(informally) up on a table in the front of the room addressing the young actors and actresses from local schools, and anyone else fortunate to have been there. She was sharply dressed in a tailored suit but might as well have been in jeans and a sweatshirt, Elizabeth is as beautiful as ever, amazingly personable, and was candid as she recounted her career. She addressed all the questions with great attention and I believe she really made a difference to everyone in the room. One thing she mentioned is many actors who have had stage experience do well in film. I guess you can chew gum, speak and remember your lines, walk across the stage or set at the same time( my words). But makes sense as far as the experience performing in front of people.

Watch The Mad Multi-Tasker on You Tube, dB+1 entry in the 2006 festival. It is a look at a week in the life of Douglas Branson, and features some of his favorite faces around The Town of Kent. Also at the very end is a trailer of the film in the works... Have You Seen Tan ? A film with much of the raw footage shot in the 80's on and around South Street Philadelphia. Michael Tancredi painted hundreds of large airbrush paintings of dead movie and rock stars, including John Lennon, John Belushi, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando.
