Friday Morning Broadcast Now Has Weather Report
Students in both eighth grade science classes have been working on a weather unit. Mrs. Derrenbacher and Mr. Persons decided all this knowledge should be shared with the rest of the student body and requested student volunteers to be weather persons on the Friday broadcast. Many students were excited to sign up, and it's now a weekly feature. Our first broadcast was a big hit and we look forward to many more.....maybe next we should look into a weather deck!

Mrs.
Brauer Teaches Her Students From Japan
Students
in Mrs. Serrano's reading class were excited to share a lesson with
their former teacher who has taken a leave of absence and is living
in Japan. The class created questions concerning life in Japan and
asked Mrs. Brauer via a computer and iSight camera that was
projected on the large screen in the computer lab. The lesson gave
them knowledge about Japanese life, as well as the understanding of
what a global world technology is creating.

Mrs.
Pallotta and Mrs. Sexton have ePals
Mrs. Pallotta's 6th grade students and Mrs. Sexton's 5th grade
students are piloting an email program called ePALS Classroom
Exchange. This web-based email program offers safe filters so
students can only email others within the ePALS community. It also
offers language translation features so contact with students in
other countries can be made. Mrs. Pallotta has made contact with a
teacher in China whose students want to practice their English.
Mrs. Sexton's students have been using the program to email their
writing pieces to each other for editing and suggestions. The
students in both classes are very excited and continue to find new
educational uses for the program.

Middle School
Promotes Literacy
In an effort to promote literacy
and feature exceptional writing, teachers are submitting exemplary
work to be read by the student author on the Friday morning
announcement broadcast. This allows the student authors to be
recognized for their efforts, provides an authentic audience, and
allows other students to hear what their classmates are producing.
Modeling quality writing helps to raise the bar for all students.
This week's featured author is Brianna S., a sixth grade student in
Mrs.Pallotta,s class. Morning announcers are Alyssa C. and Sarah
D.. Mr. Hutson shared the quote of the
day.

What
Is a Lumens?
It's a digital visualizer that
allows teachers to project any image through their projection unit
onto a screen for students to view. In the past, teachers had to
use an overhead machine that presented a flat image. The Lumens has
a gooseneck camera head that that can be rotated 360 degrees to
capture 3D objects at any angle. Any image can be captured and
stored for future use in presentations. See pictures below of its
use during a demonstration in Mr. Person's science
class.

Presentation
Cart
We are happy to announce the
addition of a projection cart that allows us to televise events in
our building via a cable station that can be transmitted to every
classroom. We are using this technology to have a live broadcast of
Mr. Hutson’s and Mrs. Clark’s welcome to the parents on
both Meet the Teacher Nights. Students have already witnessed a
live broadcast of morning announcements. This will allow many
teachers to watch special speakers from their classroom, rather
than having to assemble in the gym. It will give students the
chance to create a live broadcast of the morning announcements that
will be viewed in all classrooms. A teacher can give a lesson in
one room that can be watched in several locations simultaneously.
There are many ideas buzzing for potential uses.
