The Products of Culture are a key part of human existence, even in what some historians call the Dark Ages. They define a society, and its perceived advances by those who come after. They indicate a level of stability and prosperity that allows people to strive for something more than mere survival. The Products of Culture are: Art, Music, Education, and Literature.
Culture is a luxury. The products of culture can only be produced and disseminated in an environment in which the basic needs of society are more than met. Scholars and other individuals can then spend time and energy on abstract thoughts and the development of arts only if they are not required to spend all of their energy on the mere elements of survival. |

The Carolingian Minuscule was itself an important product of culture. This script as a product of culture was developed by Alcuin of York. he was appointed head of Charlemagne’s Palace at Aachen. There he developed the Carolingian minuscule. The Minuscule itself was widespread by virtue of prosperity and political stability, which set the seen for another important product of culture in the era, the increased creation, dissemination and reproduction of literature. Both the literature of the Carolingian era and the new trends in production and dissemination of literature are products of culture in the new Carolingian era. Carolingian Minuscule helped shape another important product of culture, which was the newfound ease of spreading knowledge, sharing ideas, and developing a culture of knowledge.
Education was another key product of culture in the Carolingian age. Education had fallen by the wayside during the Merovingian era. As a result of the increased political stability introduced during the Carolingian era, increased many-fold. There are two very important causes for this growth. First of all is the prosperity and stability which allows for more intellectual time to be spent. Quite simply, when there is constant war, or when life consists merely of subsistence, there can be little education beyond that of war and subsistence. However, when a surplus of intellectual time and resources, learning increases, and the fruits of these intellectual efforts are shared through use of the Minuscule. |
