Christmas in Kyneton

I wished I'd stopped to take a photo - this morning as I drove to Bendigo on the Calder Highway I passed by Kyneton at about 9:00am. The car told me it was -1 outside (!!!) and there was a thick white coating of frost as far as the eye could see - it indeed looked like everything was coated in snow. Weird!

Belle & Sebastian

Oh how cute!

The band was cute - the fans were cuter, the support act was cute - I just sat around basically watching cuteness all over! I dunno where those mod girls get their clothes but they were beautiful . Peter Pan collars all over the audience, the girls all looking like Carnaby Street in the 60s the boys all looking like Paul Weller...sooooo cute!

Oh yeh - there was music...if you insist. Architecture in Helsinki were just as I imagined, straight from hanging out behind the music block at Wesley (or similar) - way cute - way boppy and refreshingly they were in awe of their surroundings and not bemoaning the fact that most of the audience were still outside drinking the beers that they weren't allowed to bring into the Palais (such a beautiful venue). B&S mentioned the venue as well and went on to impress me with their full sound. They lost the way with a few of their albums (bit too much esoteric filler for me) but Dear Catastrophe Waitress was a return to their best form (the first few songs on tiger milk and a spinkling of songs from their following albums). I think it was a good time to see them, at a peak of sorts.

Retro Food

During these long cold weeks I found myself fixating on food from the 70s... from my childhood...it's not always an attractive meal proposition. This weekend I cooked porcupine meatballs - a distinct throwback to Women's Weekly Cooking. Of course I revised it for the naughties - I can't bear the thought of a can of soup being the main ingredient in anything I cooked! (no I don't like apricot chicken). They were quite nice actually.

It was a horrible day here, there was hail and heavy rain in the afternoon.

And it was quite awful in Wellington as well for the first Bledisloe Cup game - which australia lost. I think we played the wrong team for the conditions and would have been much better off starting with George Smith, rucking was going to be much more prevalent than line outs. We should have played Matt Burke at fullback who can kick a wet ball, and we should have played Matty Henjack in place of Chris Whittaker.

And the least said about the silly refereeing the better, though that certainly affected both teams.

I also watched Lost in Translation again last night on DVD. I found it no where near as satisfying as watching it in the cinema. The "space" Sophia created in the shots, the dialogue, the blocking, the pace all seemed to be much reduced on the small screen. A shame really as I was looking forward to immersing myself in that space again. I don't remember Scarlett wearing undies in the cinema release but she does on the DVD - has this been changed?

Today I saw a man ...

Today I saw a man who looked just like Johnny Vegas - he was carrying a bunch of red roses crowned by a tacky red foil heart the size of a pumpkin. The T-shirt he was wearing said "slave trader". I looked around for a film crew before I laughed.
