Kwizzin'

There's this pub right... and this TV show...and well...a star is born!

So I went to this pub to see a taping of a popular music Quiz show and became a contestant (and a funny one at that!)

So the pub was the Espy
and the show is RocKwiz
and I am a contestant on the very last show of this season - which will shown in about 17 weeks time! (there will be a party once we know exactly when)_

Props to the friend who arranged to be there...

I got to sing on national telly .. and answer one scary music-geek question ... and made a funny joke ;-)

All in all not a bad night.

Woah!

Today - I bought a house - it seemed too easy...

Finally - after looking off and on for a few years - and seriously looking for the last six months - I bought a house.

It's a house I like - and perhaps not suited to a lot of other people - so maybe that's why it felt like a bargain? It's not in the suburb I live in and love now, but it's only a little way up the road. It's a 90 year old Georgian style terrace and it's got a real back yard! after 18 months the apartment I am living in has become to feel really small. So no dishwasher - but a real kitchen! and it's not stainless steel! yay. It's feels solid and comfy rather than flash and austere and I reckon it suits me, and I it! Now I just have to wait until January before I can start hanging things up on the walls. Christmas, birthday and housewarming presents? Roof insulation or labour to fit same thanks! :-)

Tea & Scones?

A girl will go a long way for a decent cuppa.

And today - I found a great cuppa! I read about Old Malcom's Inn in the Age. Okay -so they sent me down a pretty dodgy rough road on their mud map - but they are forgiven - if only due to the big pot of strong tea - made with tank water and the scones.

But I'm ahead of myself - today was shaping up to be not much in the big smoke, so I pulled out the pile of paper clippings I've kept on interesting drives and places to visit in country Vic. Ahh - Avoca .. St Arnaud - wineries and the promise of a decent cuppa half way through - that'll do me. I loaded the iPod up with all the podcasts I had downloaded over the last week, grabbed some walking boots and a parker, and apple and a bottle of water and headed off. Past Ballarat and turn right, well actually - I missed the turnoff due to a fascinating article on BBC 4 "Go Digital" show about an arts student and her teacher who have made a podcasts of themselves talking about the art at MOMA - the alternative tour...what a brilliant use of the technology.

Nice roads, not much traffic, country towns. Off the Sunraysia highway to Moonambel and Pyrenees Winemaking district. I didn't really feel like wine tasting so I drove on Barkly. The dirt road out of Barkly to Redbank (famously known for it's Sally's Paddock Wine) looked graded and fine - which it was - until we hit the ranges more properly. The St Arnaud Range National Park is pretty darn nice - in that Eucalypt forest type of way. Mainly Grey Box and Ironbark.

I stopped for a walk (and to rest my addled brains) at Dead Man's TRack (who could resist) and trundled up the ridge. Plenty of Rosellas but no Wedge Tailed Eagles - I think it was a bit too cold and drizzly for them! Back into the car just as the rain came down in earnest and headed but to some smooth roads near Redbank. Left towards St Arnaud and a few kilometers up the road I saw the "do not miss" ivy covered Old Malcolm's B&B in Stuart Mill. There were a few folk out the front, a dog in a truck and I needed a cup of tea. And thanks to Aileen and Ray I got one. And, if you cna believe it, Aileen knocked up a batch of scones for me while I waited .. how's that? I won't promise that kind of service to everyone - but if you time it right you may just been in luck. I had a quick tour of the two rooms on offer for accommodation, Aileen and I chatted about food, Ray and I about Jet Fighter pilots and fishing (??!!). I brought home with me some local honey, some more wonderful scones, and some local bread.

I bit off a bit more than I could chew by driving up to St Arnaud before heading home via Maldon and Castlemaine, but it was fun!

Christmas in Kyneton

I wished I'd stopped to take a photo - this morning as I drove to Bendigo on the Calder Highway I passed by Kyneton at about 9:00am. The car told me it was -1 outside (!!!) and there was a thick white coating of frost as far as the eye could see - it indeed looked like everything was coated in snow. Weird!

Just like an ordinary day

An annual leave day spent seeking out the sunny bits, Harry Pottering, and watching the Tour de France. I really thought that Ivan Blasso would get the jump on Lance today - and he almost pulled it off...almost.

Sunday ...

Lots of lovely sunshine again this afternoon - I finally started on cleaning up the courtyard. Whatever they have planted as a ground cover in the planet boxes is just growing rampant. It doesn't seem to want to stay small and controlled..so I guess I will have to find something else to plant. I've ripped it out of one of the big boxes and the small one and weeded most of the courtyard before bringing my icy fingers back inside to the warmth. Maybe some flax plants would be nice? Maybe I'll have a party out there in the summer. Shared a meal tonight - a nice Chicken Kiev and a roumelade of Celeriac - which is the first time I've had it. Thin matchsticks mixed with mustard mayo and nashi pear,,,yum! With lots of sprouts and lovely carrots. A yummy ginger and lime pudding to finish...not bad!

Obie hugs

Aww - The girls and the vets really love it when Obie boards there - it almost makes up for the guilt I feel at leaving him there. There were two very lovely Abyssinian brothers boarding at the same time - gorgeous looking boys but they are apparently "biters" like many Abyssinian's. So he is especially welcome. They tell me he just lives inside his igloo, but he moves it all around the cage. When we got home he gave me a long cuddle with lots of purrs so I guess I might be forgiven? It's nice to have him home.

Barossa in Fog

I left Adelaide early this morning to drive home via the Barossa...I've never seen that part of the country, and I still haven't! The whole area was clouded in a thick heavy fog. At least I got to use the fog lights! I stopped for a yummy breakfast in Angaston - freshly baked baguette with local ham and brie, Very indulgent! The trip from there to Swan Reach was a surprise - You drive down into a river valley (there was actual water running through! haven't seen that in a while!) and the hills were green and rolling. There is one of those cute ferries across the Murray at Swan Reach and then it's on to Berri and Renmark, Ouyen, Donald, Avoca, Ballarat and a long long long trip home! I'll have to do it again - but will plan to stay overnight on the Murray somewhere,

Loved the drive! zoom zoom

Fiona Hall in Adelaide

So - an early visit to the Central Markets for the fixings for dinner. I'm cooking Nonna's spag for the family tonight. Also popped in to Coles for various supplies for the folks at home.. YoYos, Fruchocs, Woodfords lemonade and SnoDrop. I also grabbed some Haighs chocs which I actually left on the counter I think - cause they didn't make it home! For some unknown reason...I agreed to attend my five year old niece's birthday party held at one of those indoor play areas..."Snakes and Ladders'. It was horrible ;-) Low roofed room, wet day, school holidays, red cordial and junk food....argh! I escaped to the Art Gallery of South Australia (no kids in there!) to see the Fiona Hall exhibition.

Fiona's work first made an impression on me when I saw her piece " Dead in the Water" in the NGV. The combination of coral-like pieces, beads and marine animals captivated me. Then I "discovered" a set of her Paradisis terrestris sardine tins on display also at the NGV. I actually happened across a poster of some more of this series at the MCA in Sydney which I have had framed and it looks fabulous.

Curiously, although her work seems to be mostly for galleries and museums rather than individual collectors, there doesn't seem to be many posters or cards of her work.

So now I think may favourite of her bead craft items is Cell Culture and through the fabulous companion book I'm becoming enamoured with a collage piece called Syntax of Flowers - I wish it had been on display.

And dinner turned out Ok too - Jessica, Shan and Nicole all helped out and we made a great spag bol and garlic bread with salad. Yum! oh and of course Aunty Suzanne's Special Strawberries (choc coated!).

Another late night watching the tour - but I managed to sleep really well again.

Adelaide Ho!

An early start for the drive to Adelaide. I even managed to navigate the Western Ring Road to the Western Highway...I just don't get that road! I drove up past Strathmore to get on...I guess you can get there from The Tulla as well - but that's just a bit too scary for me!

Had a good run - enjoyed the whole podcast thing except for that awful thing that it doesn't remember where you up to when you take it out of the cradle, so you have to plan the episode for the length of your next drive session, quite annoying really. bad decision - sidetrip through Hahndorf - and over the ranges into thick pea soup fog! Bit hairy coming down the hills, but I made it and arrived at the quite nice Majestic Roof Garden hotel. Large rooms - huge bath - separate shower - and doonas! yay! I think I found my new favourite in Adelaide.

The standard dinner at Stanleys for whiting with my sister, her husband and my two nieces Jess and Shan and this time - Cinderella! It's Shania's birthday tomorrow and she got a child sized doll a bit early!

Stupid sign - Mount Zero 340m 340 metres!!!! that's a bloomin' bump not a mountain!

Winterreise

Stately oblique contemporary movement adds atmosphere to Schubert's song cycle.

I knew it was Trisha Brown's choreography, but it wasn't until I heard and interview with Simon Keenlyside, the baritone, that I made a decision to go and see this ppiece. SOng cycles aren't really my "thing" and I guessed (correctly as it turned out) that most of the audience wold be there for the songs, and probably hate the dance. It;'s funny how the feeling of hte audeicnec can
