eskimo bliss podcast 12.09.07 - year-end indie recap

 <itunes:author>eskimo bliss</itunes:author>

(Background music La Primera Navidad by Easy Athems)

My fave record of the year was probably The National's "Boxer," but you can hear songs from that record anywhere. So this podcast is devoted so some of my other favorites, from lesser-known artists whom you may not have heard of.

Novi Split - Leaving It (Pink in the Sink, Hush Records)
Hush Records out of Portland has become one of my favorite labels recently, largely because I'm obsessed with anything west coast. But my favorite band off their roster, Novi Split, is a perfect example of west coast indie, with low-fi bedroom tunes that are enhanced by swelling strings and plenty of beeps, bleeps and drum machines. Leaving It is my favorite track off Pink in the Sink and was the first tune I ever heard from the band. I was instantly hooked. The entire album is a keeper though.

David Shultz - Already There (Sinner's Gold, Triple Stamp Records)
David is a songwriter from Richmond, VA; he found me on myspace early in the year and I'm so glad he did. Sinner's Gold was one of my most listened to albums of '07, every time I listen I pick a new favorite but "Already There" is definitely a standout, one of the obvious "singles" of the album. Check out also his debut self-titled disc which is a little less polished but still just as strong. myspace.com/davidshultz

The Jupiter Watts - Nothing At All (Jupiter Watts, Two Sheds Music)
Jupiter Watts is from Atlanta, and play a mix of Brit-pop and indie rock. you can definitely hear the British influence, primarily from the vocals of guitarist James Trigg, but there's also hints of Luna and Guided by Voices, and Yo La Tengo in their slower, softer tunes. Definitely one of the strongest bands Atlanta has to offer; I was lucky enough to attend one of their shows at Dunch at the EARL, where they did slower, softer stripped-down versions of their songs, and it was one of the best shows I've seen from a local band all year. Hopefully 2008 will bring a new release from these guys. twoshedsmusic.com for info

Staggering Statistics - Dog and Pony Show (I'm Thinking About Changing, self-released)
I also played another tune from these guys on my last podcast; I found them while searching for info on the band Tryphtophan; this is what Tryphtophan singer/guitarist Austin Brown is doing now. You can download their album for free from their website staggeringstatistics.com. I love this stuff because it reminds me of bands that I used to dig in the early nineties.

Beat Radio - Everything is Temporary (The Great Big Sea, Moon or Mars)
As much as I often despise myspace, I gotta give it credit for turning me onto some really good music. I found Beat Radio through the Easy Anthems myspace, and from some very brief research it seems the two bands share a member in Phil Jimenez. I was instantly addicted to Beat Radio's organic, sincere, low-fi indierock. Their debut LP "The Great Big Sea" can be downloaded for free from their myspace. This seems to be a new trend these days; bands offering free downloads of their albums, at least for a limited time. I like it!

No River City - Jacy Farrow (Wolves and Fishes, self-released)
Another Atlanta offering, these guys do the alt. country thing ala Gram Parsons; singer Drew de Man has the best last name in music and pens a mighty fine tune. My only beef with this album is it is very sad (the song I've chosen to play for you is one of the exceptions and more upbeat tunes on the record). And I tend to like sad music, but I think when it's sad country-ish music, too much of it gives me that tear in my beer feel. But I'm being picky because what NRC does it does very, very well.

Pelle Carlberg - I Love You, You Imbecile (In a Nutshell, Labrador Records)
I've played Pelle (note on the pronunciation, I've been told it's like "fella" and is apparently a popular name in Sweden) in my previous podcast; this is another tune of his sophomore release "In a Nutshell" on Swedish label Labrador Records. This is a wonderful album, especially for fans of pop such as Belle and Sebastian. Pelle mines similar territory, only better (IMHO).

Thomas Denver Jonsson - My Wardrobe (The Lake Acts Like an Ocean, Kite Recordings)
Another repeat performer, as I played Thomas's "The Border" on my last podcast. Thomas is from Sweden but does a damn good job channeling Americana. If you like stuff like Neil Young you'll probably love him, check out his stuff and get more info at thomasdenver.com

Filthybird - Warm Womb (Southern Skies, Red Strings Records)
Filthybird hails from one of my favorite NC cities, Greensboro. They released their debut this year and I'm just hoping that slow and steady wins the race for these guys and more folks catch on next year, because this is truly a band that deserves a larger audience. Lead singer Renee's voice is mind-blowing, and I can say that live they really bring it too. myspace.com/filthybird... get the disc from cdbaby or download from itunes.

Just some fine indie music I've been digging lately:

1. Easy Anthems "Concrete Star Signs" - from New York... indie folk duo reminds me of a cross between early Rilo Kiley and KaiserCartel. Download their debut LP for free from their website easyanthems.org
2. Pelle Calrberg "I touched you at the soundcheck" - from the fine Swedish pop label Labrador records; his album is full of very funny titles like this one and "Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow?"
3. Thomas Denver Jonsson "The Border"
- another Swede... Awesome americana/folk, reminds me of Neil Young. His new album "The Lake Acts Like an Ocean" is out now in Sweden; go to thomasdenver.com for info on how to get it.
4. Staggering Statistics "Sharecropper's Hands" - Found this band while googling Tryphtophan, which is singer/guitar player Austin Brown's old band. This is what he's doing now and their most recent album "I'm Thinking About Changing" is available for free download from staggeringstatistics.com. GREAT indierock ala early nineties stuff like Pavement, Grifters, etc.
5. Un Deux Trois "Everything That is Happening is Happening" - from Chapel Hill, NC; the new project from Heather McIntire, who started out in Wilmington, NC performing under the name Bellafea. www.undeuxtroisband.com
6. Sea Wolf "You're a Wolf" - from their debut EP "Get to the River Before It Runs too Low" which came out earlier this year on Dangerbird Records. Debut full-length will be released later this month, also on Dangerbird and they'll be on tour through the fall - myspace.com/seawolf for dates
7. Eleni Mandell "Moonglow, Lamp Low" - From her Yep Roc release "Miracle of Five" which came out in February. www.elenimandell.com
