Ashcroft Maintains Anti-Suicide Stance

WASHINGTON -- Officials in Oregon are still reeling after U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft imposed an injunction to stop doctors from prescribing lethal medications for assisted suicides.

Ashcroft upped the ante. The Attorney General last week forwarded legislation that would make it a federal capital crime to request assistance in suicide. Those seeking lethal medication under the law would face the death penalty.

"Clearly, there's no place in society for people who ask doctors to help them die," Ashcroft said. "Those kind of people deserve to die."

Oregon officials were the first in the country to make it legal for doctors to aid the terminally ill in seeking an early, less painful death. Surprisingly, Oregon lawmakers are standing in support of Ashcroft's latest move.

"They'll get it one way or another. But it won't be their decision." Ashcroft maintains.
