Technotronic

November 4, 2001

EDITORS' CORNER

Music historians often point to the soothing sounds of Simon and Garfunkel or James Taylor when discussing the complexities and emotional stimulation involved in modern music. Those historians stop a couple decades too early. Technotronic. The name describes not only the type of music - techno - but the method by which the sounds derive, electronically. Talk about complex. While Simon and Garfunkel, James Taylor, Carly Simon and others did strike some chords with their descriptive story telling set to soothing sound, they never once dared their listeners to get their booties on the dance floor. To the music scholars who overlook the skillful rhythms laid out by Technotronic, I have one challenge to issue - yes, try to keep your booties off the dance floor, make my day.

It is not generally known that the real "singer" for Technotronic was not the front woman (Felly) placed on the album covers, but instead a Zairean Manuela Kamosi (Ya Kid K). If you've seen the Saturday Night Live reruns on Comedy Central, you can see that there indeed is a "kid" rapping. We here at Cornography cannot determing the sex of Ya Kid K. But we think that Ya Kid K has an internal rhythm that makes all of Technotronic's songs sound similar. Note how Move That Body, Pump up the Jam and This Beat is Technotronic all sound similar. All permutations on the same theme. Click on these links to clips and listen for yourself.

Pump Up the Jam (#0295) 11/4/01

Pump up the jam
A little more
Granny never buys it
At the store
A little thing she likes to boast
The stuff she smears on grandpa's toast
Rhubarb, apple
Beef and ham?
Some crazy stuff in grandma's jam

Emporium (#0296) 11/4/01

Welcome to Ned's Emporium
A different kind of store
A place where you'll find furry things
Earmuffs, shirts and more
If you want a special piece
A pelt we wish we had
Bring it in, we'll slit it's throat
And even paint it plaid

Banana (#0021)

Banana, banana, yellow as can be
Banana, banana, your flavor sets me free
I sing, I sing, out to you banana
I sing, I sing, copacabana
