CHUCK CLOSE PREVIEW PARTY 7/23/05

Chuck Close Preview Party

When we leave the apartment to go to the Chuck Close Opening, we realize it is incredibly humid out. I try to take a couple of pictures outside, but the lens fogs up imediately. The two blocks to the Walker seem really long. Even though I wear a loose short-sleeve shirt and Linda wears a black sleeveless cocktail dress, we are beginning to sweat by the time we get to the Walker.

We arrive at 9:15 pm, almost immediately after it opens. We hand over our tickets at the entrance and walk to the new wing, where the exhibition is installed. As soon as we get there we are confronted with a wall of people. Everyone is trying to see the exhibit, and as usual the galleries must be at capacity, so people who want to get in have to wait until people in the galleries leave. We stand there for at least 15 or 20 minutes. Linda goes to get beers, comes back with them, we drink them, and we are still in the same spot as when we started. The line hasn’t moved at all. I see Roxy waiting ahead of us for a while, then I see her move away from the line. We too decide to go do something else for a while, and come back later when we hope the wait won’t be long.

We move over to the long glassed hallway and discover another long line. This time it is a line to get food, which is displayed on one long table with a large spread, buffet style. No servers passing trays with food around tonight. Luckily we just ate and skip this line altogether.

We decide to go over to the information desk to see if they have an itinerary. The girl at the desk tells us that she doesn’t know the schedule. She thinks that there will be music starting at 10:30 pm, but she doesn’t know for sure - She tells us that they change things around all the time so it’s hard to know what is going on. We decide to get another beer. Later on we see Greg and Ray walking towards us. They also looked at the line to get to the show and decided to wait. We chat for a while. We talk about the new MIA director. Greg heard the interview on the radio. He says he was pretty good, Maybe a little nervous at the beginning, but he became more comfortable as the interview went on. Ray and Linda talk dance for a while. We are thinking of purchasing season tickets for the contemporary series at Northrop, and we talk about who’s coming...Merce Cunningham, Bill T Jones, etc. After a while Greg and Ray decide they are going to wait in line for the show. We walk over to the exhibition entrance, but the lines are still long. All of a sudden we see Chuck Close going to the gallery himself. People part to let him through. I get a bit of film. We feel this will be a long wait, and we want to go hear some music...

We walk up to Gallery Eight, where the bands will play. It is pretty empty still. Just a few people waiting for the music to start. Out of the corner of my eye I notice Joan and Walter Mondale, and let Linda know. It isn’t too rare to see them at the Walker. Joan is, or was, a trustee at the Walker, and we saw her once before during the Mizoguchi film cycle.

Some people are going outside, probably to smoke. We decide to see what is like outside. A wave of hot humid air hits us as soon as we open the door to the roof terrace. The city view is fantastic. We walk around and take a few pictures, then it gets too hot and we go back inside.

The music starts, and it is not very good, so we walk back down and decide to go see the exhibition. We are hoping that the lines will be much smaller. That is not the case. The line to get in snakes around, just outside the gallery. We take a place and get prepared for a long wait. This time however, the line moves very fast and before we know it we are inside the galleries. We get to finally see the paintings! (See the review here)

The exit to the show is right by the food table. We are hungry by now and begin to graze. We get three or four servings of veggies with dip, and toasted bread with olive spread. Soon it is time to go out and face the heat again.

Linda and Ernesto. Happy after the show
